Plainfield Charter Township - Hills & Dales Water Main Replacement Phase 4

Important Information

Plainfield Charter Township is moving forward with plans to replace the aging cast iron water main in portions of the Hills & Dales neighborhood with new ductile iron water main. This project is part of the Township’s ongoing effort to improve water system reliability and enhance fire flow capacity within some of the Township’s original neighborhoods.

The Township has awarded the construction contract to Kentwood Excavating. Work is expected to take place between June and October 2026.

Existing water mains and water service lines will be completely replaced inside of the public road right-of-way. Portions of the road and storm sewer system impacted by water main construction will be replaced as necessary. Lawns and driveways disturbed by construction will be replaced as part of the project.

Access/Traffic:

Local traffic will be maintained during water main construction. There may be times when your driveway is inaccessible because water main construction is occurring in front of your house or driveway restoration is taking place. The contractor will work with you ahead of time and will make special access arrangements with you if needed.

Mail:

Mailboxes that interfere with water main construction will be temporarily relocated so that mail service can be maintained during construction. If your mailbox needs to be temporarily relocated, the contactor will inform you of where it has been moved to and when they anticipate it will be returned to its original location.

Garbage Pickup:

The contractor will work with you and your waste hauler to maintain service throughout construction. If water main construction interferes with your waste haulers ability to pick up your garbage, the contractor will temporarily move your garbage bins to a central location and return them to the end of your driveway by the end of the work day.

Water Service:

There will be times when your water service will be temporarily interrupted to facilitate water main connections or water service line replacement. The contractor or the Plainfield Water Department will inform you prior to this interruption taking place so that you can plan accordingly.

August 14, 2026

Progress Report:

This week included driveway and road crossing restoration on Hillsdale. Kentwood also worked on water service replacements on Lindburg and Chadwick.

Upcoming Work:

  • Next week, any remaining water service work on Lindburg and Chadwick will be wrapped up and Kentwood will begin switching over the water services on Westwood to the temporary water main.
  • Lawn restoration along Hillsdale is expected to be completed next week.
  • Driveway and road restoration work on Lindburg and Chadwick will begin once water service work is complete.
August 7, 2026

Progress Report:

The water services along Hillsdale Avenue have been replaced this week. Kentwood Excavating also completed a water main tie-in at Chadwick and Providence. The temporary water main along Westwood was built and tested this week.

Upcoming Work:

Next week will include work on the following:

  • Driveway restoration on Hillsdale.
  • Water service replacement on Lindburg and Chadwick.
  • Connect the temporary water main to the existing system and switch existing water services to the temporary water main on Westwood.
July 31, 2026

Progress Report:

Water main tie-ins were completed at the intersections of Westwood and Ambrose and Hillsdale and Eldon earlier this week. Kentwood worked on short side water service replacements on the west side of Hillsdale most of this week.

Upcoming Work:

Kentwood has a subcontractor coming in next week to begin fusing bypass piping for the temporary water main along Westwood Drive. They will also begin installing new water services under the road on Hillsdale to replace water services to homes on the east side. This work will be done without impacting the road. Water service replacements on Lindburg are also scheduled for next week.

July 24, 2026

Progress Report:

The new water main was connected to the existing water main today at t Lindburg and Providence.

Ambrose will be closed to thru traffic on Monday so that Kentwood Excavating can install new water main across the road at Westwood. Paving is scheduled for later in the week.

Kentwood Excavating will complete the water main tie-in at Eldon and Hillsdale on Tuesday.

The Plainfield Water Department has handed notices out to those houses whose water will be impacted by the shut downs on Monday and Tuesday next week. Check your front door handle for a door hanger with more information.

After the tie-in at Hillsdale and Eldon is completed Kentwood Excavating will begin water service replacements on Hillsdale. The directional drill contractor will now be on site the week of August 3 for water service replacements under the road.

July 21, 2026

Progress Report:

Kentwood Excavating is making good progress installing water main along Hillsdale Avenue and Lindburg Avenue. A second pipe crew will be on site today to complete the water main installation on Chadwick Avenue this week. Kentwood Excavating continues to work with the Plainfield Water Department to pressure test and disinfect new sections of water main as they are completed.

Upcoming Work:

Kentwood Excavating will complete the first water main connection and begin water service replacements next week. Kentwood has a directional drill contractor lined up to be on site the week of August 10 to replace water service lines under the roads.

July 10, 2026

Progress Report:

Kentwood Excavating has made good progress installing new water main along Hillsdale Avenue. A new leaching basin and storm sewer has also been installed at the intersection of Hillsdale and Providence to replace the structure that was removed for water main construction. Kentwood Excavating was only on site Monday this week as they are waiting for Consumers Energy to relocate two (2) utility poles on Hillsdale.

Upcoming Work:

Kentwood Excavating plans to be back on site starting next week (7/13). If the utility poles have not yet been relocated, Kentwood Excavating plans to start water main construction on Lindburg.
June 19, 2026

You have likely seen various activities on site over the last week. Miss Dig flags have been placed and are marking existing underground utilities, construction staking is underway, and driveway/road removals have been marked out.

Kentwood Excavating plans to have a crew on site starting next week to begin water main construction along Hillsdale Avenue. Construction will begin at the Hillsdale and Eldon intersection and progress south.

June 5, 2026

Progress Report:

This week trees and bushes were marked for removal with orange paint. Tree clearing will begin the week of June 15. Water main construction may begin as early as the week of June 22.

May 29, 2026

Progress Report:

Tree clearing and water main construction are planned to begin in the second half of July. Construction will remove landscaping within the road right-of-way and it will not be replaced as part of this project. If you have landscaping within 20 feet of the edge of the road and would like it save it, we recommend that it be moved prior to construction starting.
