Kent County Drain Commissioner - Sierra Estates Drain Improvements

Important Information

The Sierra Estates Drain Improvements project will upgrade the drainage system along Kuttshill Drive and throughout the Sierra Estates neighborhood. The project will replace the current roadside ditches and backyard swales with an underground stormwater pipe to improve drainage and reduce maintenance needs.

Construction is scheduled to begin in early April and is expected to be completed by the end of May 2026. Work will start with a full closure of Pine Meadow Drive at Kuttshill Drive and will then move north along Kuttshill Drive as construction progresses.

Access/Traffic:
Local traffic will be allowed through the work area throughout the project. However, there may be short periods when your driveway cannot be accessed while crews are working directly in front of your home or completing driveway restoration. The contractor will notify you ahead of time and will coordinate with you to make any special access arrangements you may need.

Mail:
Mail service will be maintained throughout construction. Some mailboxes may need to be temporarily moved to facilitate construction. If your mailbox is affected, the contractor will let you know where it has been relocated and when you can expect it to be returned to its original location.

Garbage Pickup:
During construction, the contractor will coordinate with you and your waste hauler to ensure your trash service continues without interruption. If construction activity prevents your waste hauler from accessing your driveway, the contractor will move your bins to a designated collection point and return them to the end of your driveway by the end of the workday.

Water Service:

The storm sewer may be in conflict with an existing water main. You will be notified by the Plainfield Water Department separately if there is a need for a planned water main shut down.

Progress Report:

This week included a lot of paving which means we are one step closer to project completion! The paving is scheduled to be completed today (Friday) except for the north church driveway. The north church driveway will be paved once the concrete has cured next week. Over the next two weeks Kentwood will work on spreading topsoil, completing the lawn restoration, and final project clean up.

Progress Report:

Kentwood completed the storm sewer installation on Monday this week and connected to the existing pipeline at the north edge of Blythefield CRC. Kentwood also worked on removing the remaining road and portions of the path that were impacted by construction. Concrete curbs were poured on Wednesday. The curb at the second church driveway will be poured once the concrete in the first driveway has cured.

Upcoming Work:

Driveway, path, and road paving are scheduled for next week. Kentwood will continue to work on lawn restoration.

Progress Report:

This week, Kentwood Excavating made good progress again on the 36″ storm sewer installation along Kuttshill. The pipe installation is scheduled to be complete either today or tomorrow (Saturday).

Next week, Kentwood will begin working on restoration along the pipeline route. Kentwood will begin trail, driveway, and road restoration activities. Concrete curbs and sidewalk will be replaced later in the week.

Kentwood Excavating has completed the storm sewer construction is Pine Meadows and is working their way north along Kuttshill. To date, Kentwood Excavating has been working with the appropriate utility companies to relocate their utilities where there are conflicts with the proposed storm sewer pipeline.

Looking ahead, Kentwood will continue to install storm sewer north along Kuttshill and plans to work tomorrow (Saturday) to continue this week’s strong progress. In the coming weeks, Kentwood will be working on regrading the portions of Pine Meadows and Kuttshill that were impacted with construction. These areas will be paved once the gravel base has been installed.

Kuttshill traffic will continue to be flagged with one lane of traffic around the work area.

This Week:

  • Kentwood Excavating has mobilized equipment to the site and received storm sewer deliveries.
  • Tree clearing was completed along Kuttshill Drive.
  • Water main relocation at Pine Meadows Drive was completed and storm sewer installation in Pine Meadows Drive has begun.
  • Kentwood Excavating is coordinating with DTE Energy to remove and replace a portion of existing gas main that interferes with the proposed pipeline.

Next Week:

  • Kentwood Excavating will complete storm sewer construction in Pine Meadows Drive and continue north along Kuttshill Drive.
  • Kentwood Excavating will maintain gravel on the disturbed roadways until the asphalt paving plants open later this month.

TREE CLEARING UPDATE

Work on the upcoming project is scheduled to begin April 6.

  • Tree clearing will start on April 6 and is expected to take two days.
  • Storm sewer construction will occur between April 6 and April 30.
  • Restoration activities are planned for May 1 through May 22.

We will continue to share updates as the project progresses. The dates noted above are subject to change based on weight restrictions on local roadways.

The project team visited the site today to review the overall project and identify the trees that must be removed for the upcoming drain construction.

Residents living along Kuttshill, within the immediate project area, will receive a letter from the Kent County Drain Commissioner’s Office next week with additional project details.

Tree clearing is expected to begin the week of March 9, depending on weather conditions.

Kentwood Excavating plans to begin construction the week of April 6 and aims to reach substantial completion by May 8. This schedule may change as work progresses and will depend on weather.

Residents can expect Pine Meadows to be closed at Kuttshill during active construction. Kuttshill may have to be closed to facilitate water main relocation if this work is necessary. One way traffic along Kuttshill will be maintained with flaggers during the work day.
