Plainfield Charter Township is planning to construct a mile of new water main to complete a water main loop on the south side of West River Drive between Rogue River Road and Ethelwin Avenue. The project also includes the abandonment of existing water service lines that cross under West River Drive. This project is expected to begin around the beginning of May and be completed by early August 2026.
Access/Traffic:
Single lane closures along West River Drive will be used to facilitate construction.
Mail:
Mail service will be maintained throughout construction.
Garbage Pickup:
Garbage service will be maintained throughout construction.
Water Service:
Minor impacts to water service will be necessary to facilitate water service replacements as well as water main connections. You will be notified ahead of time if your water service is expected to be temporarily impacted during construction.

Kentwood Excavating has completed the water service abandonment work on the north side of West River Drive. Restoration work has been ongoing on both sides of West River Drive. Paving of the road patches is scheduled for today (Friday) and Monday next week. Next week Kentwood will wrap up the remaining work on this project and complete final project cleanup activities.
Driveway and lawn restoration activities are wrapping up this week on the south side of West River Drive.
Starting Monday (8/10), Kentwood will switch the lane closure to the north side of West River Drive (westbound traffic) so that the existing water services can be dug up at the existing water main and be abandoned under the road. The lane closure will remain in place overnight as some of this work requires the road to be disturbed to excavate for the water main.
This work has been coordinated with the Kent County Road Commission who also has a project starting on Monday to rehabilitate the Jupiter Avenue bridge over the Grand River.
Progress Report:
Kentwood completed the final water main tie-in on Monday and completed water service replacements on the south side of the road.
Portions of the road side were restored with topsoil and hydroseed.
Upcoming Work:
Next week concrete and asphalt replacement is scheduled for the south side of the road. Kentwood will work to wrap up driveway and lawn restoration on the south side of the road next week. Once the south side is complete, the lane closure will be shifted to the north side of the road so that the old water services under West River Drive can be disconnected from the 24-inch water main and abandoned.
The final water main tie-in on the east end of the project is scheduled for Monday morning. Kentwood Excavating will finish water service replacements east of Jupiter and begin driveway restoration next week.
Progress Report:
The new water main along West River Drive is now complete. Kentwood Excavating will be working with the Plainfield Water Department to test and disinfect the new pipe later this week. Pending passing test results this week, Kentwood Excavating will complete the remaining new water service installations next week. The final water main connection at the east end will also be completed next week.
Upcoming Work:
Once all of the new water services have been installed on the south side of the road, Kentwood Excavating will move the lane closure to the north side of West River Drive to disconnect the old water services from the existing water main. Restoration work along the south side of West River Drive will also be completed over the next few weeks.
Progress Report:
Kentwood Excavating located and repaired a leak in the new water main between Jupiter and Karcher earlier this week. After a successful pressure test west of Jupiter, Kentwood began installing new water main on the east side of Jupiter.
Upcoming Work:
Kentwood is on schedule to complete the water main installation next week and will then begin water service replacements between Jupiter and St. Lawrence. Testing on the newly installed water main east of Jupiter should begin end of next week.
Progress Report:
Kentwood Excavating and the Plainfield Water Department pressure tested and disinfected the next section of new water main. Kentwood completed some water service work on the west end of the project as they waited for dewatering wells to be installed at Karcher.
The trenchless casing installation under Jupiter was completed this week.
Upcoming Work:
Kentwood will continue to install water main between Karcher and Jupiter. Water service work will continue as new sections of water main pass testing.
Progress Report:
This week Kentwood continued to install new water main along West River Drive. Water main has been installed through the St. Lawrence intersection and continues east towards Karcher. Kentwood and the Plainfield Water Department began filling and pressure testing the first section of new water main. Marksman, Kentwood’s bore & jack subcontractor, began moving equipment onto the site at the Jupiter Avenue crossing.

Next week, Kentwood will continue to install new water main east towards Jupiter. Kentwood and the Plainfield Water Department will begin the process of disinfecting the first section of new water main. Marksman will set up and complete the trenchless casing installation via bore & jack under Jupiter Avenue.
Progress Report:
Water main construction is underway this week. Kentwood Excavating began installing the new 12-inch water main near Rogue River Road and is working west to east. A single lane closure along West River Drive will continue to move with the work zone during the day as construction progresses.
Construction is scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 26 after the memorial day holiday.
