Georgetown Charter Township - 48th Ave Transmission Main Phase 1

Progress Report:

• Georgetown Charter Township closed down 48th Avenue between the south driveway of Unity Christian High School to Port Sheldon Street on Monday, June 2. The remainder of the week the Contractor was placing traffic control devices and signs, installing the dewatering system, and relocating a well.
• On Monday, June 9, 2025 the Contractor began installing the transmission main heading north from Unity Christian’s south driveway.

Upcoming Work:

• The Contractor plans to continue installing 24 inch water transmission main to the north and will likely be crossing Unity Christian High School’s north driveway and shutting down that driveway.

Extra Notes:

• As a reminder, police officers will continue to be present to ensure safe and effective working conditions for the construction crew and stop drivers from using 48th Ave between UCHS and Port Sheldon Street
• In addition, to access UCHS, please utilize Van Buren Street and head to UCHS’ south driveway.

Progress Report:

Georgetown Charter Township will be continuing construction of a new 24-inch water transmission main on 48th Ave from north of Unity Christian High School’s (UCHS’s) south drive to the north side of Port Sheldon Street. Traffic detour/closure starting Monday, June 2, 2025 is described below.

Stage 4: Beginning on Monday, June 2, 2025, 48th Ave will be closed from the north of the south drive of Unity to South of Port Sheldon Street. The proposed detour will utilize Van Buren St, 40th Ave, and Port Sheldon Street. UCHS will be accessible from Van Buren Street only.

The Contractor will be dropping off materials (pipe, fittings, etc.), installing a point dewatering system, and setting up traffic control at the beginning of the week. Near the middle/end of the week the Contractor hopes to start installing pipe.

As a reminder, police officers will continue to be present to ensure safe and effective working conditions for the construction crew and stop drivers from using 48th Ave between UCHS and Port Sheldon Street.

Georgetown Charter Township will be continuing construction of a new 24-inch water transmission main on 48th Ave from north of Unity Christian High School’s (UCHS’s) south drive to the north side of Port Sheldon Street. Traffic detours during the summer work will be in the following Stages:

Stage 4: Beginning on June 2, 2025, 48th Ave will be closed from the north of the south drive of Unity to South of Port Sheldon Street. The proposed detour will utilize Van Buren St, 40th Ave, and Port Sheldon Street. UCHS will be accessible from Van Buren Street only. Detour Map

Stage 5: In midsummer**, the full intersection at 48th Ave and Port Sheldon will be closed. This will mean no traffic will be able to travel through this intersection from any direction. The proposed detour routes will utilize Van Buren Street, 36th Ave, Baldwin Street, and 56th Ave. and UCHS will be accessible from Van Buren Street only. Detour Map

Some additional restoration and punch list work is also anticipated south of Van Buren Street along 48th Avenue. This work is not anticipated to require a closure of 48th Avenue south of Van Buren Street but may involve shoulder closures or flagging.

Progress Report:

The barricades on 48th Avenue are being removed today allowing for through traffic along 48th Avenue. Give ‘Em A Brake Safety will remove all remaining detour signs before Monday, October 28. Thanks to everyone for their patience with construction this fall.

Upcoming Work:

As a reminder, we will continue water transmission main construction after Unity Christian High School is finished with school for the year in late May or early June of 2025. Construction will continue up through Port Sheldon and is scheduled to be completed by mid-August 2025.

Progress Report:

The contractor installed water main through UCHS’s south drive and continued to the north towards the ending point. The last water main pipes for the year were laid, and the hydrant and valves will be installed on Monday, October 14 so testing can be done that week. Restoration south of Van Buren Street has been completed as well as most of the restoration south of UCHS’s south drive. UCHS’s south drive is being restored today and possibly tomorrow with a tentative opening on Monday.

Upcoming Work:

The restoration work will continue into next week and will tentatively be completed by Friday, October 18. The last hydrant and valve will also be installed and testing will be completed next week as well.

Extra Notes:

Although the driveway is tentatively planned to be open by Monday, October 14, it is highly advised that traffic will continue to access Unity Christian High School from the north driveway due to construction continuing to occur until October 18 from the south driveway to Van Buren Street. Testing and restoration will be wrapping up that week and it is anticipated that construction will be finished for the year by Friday, October 18 (weather dependent).

***UNITY CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL SOUTH DRIVE CLOSURE***

The Contractor will be closing down the south drive entrance for Unity Christian High School beginning Monday, October 7 to cross the driveway with the 24 inch water transmission main. This closure will be in place until Saturday, October 12 (weather dependent). Unity will continue to only be accessible from the intersection of Port Sheldon Street and 48^th Ave (no access will be available from Van Buren Street; please see the below map for more information).

Although the driveway is anticipated to be open by Monday, October 14, it is highly advised that traffic will continue to access Unity Christian High School from the north driveway due to construction continuing to occur until October 18 from the south driveway to Van Buren Street. Testing and restoration will be wrapping up that week and it is anticipated that construction will be finished for the year by Friday, October 18 (weather dependent).

It is also worth noting that all traffic control south of Van Buren Street along 48^th Avenue will be removed by the end of Saturday, October 5 (weather dependent). However, as a reminder 48^th Avenue will still be fully closed north of Van Buren Street until construction is anticipated to be completed on Friday, October 18 (weather dependent).

Progress Report:

The contractor installed water main north of Van Buren Street up to about 1000 feet south of UCHS’s south drive, finished reconstructing the driveways south of Van Buren Street, and is close to finishing restoration and seeding south of Van Buren.

Upcoming Work:

The contractor will continue to install water main to the north. Testing for a portion of the water main will take place early next week.

Extra Notes:

Unity Christian: Access to Unity Christian will remain only from the 48th Ave/Port Sheldon intersection (see detour photo below) until late October 2024 when Dean’s anticipates completing construction for the year (and returning back again in late May 2024). The contractor does not plan to close the south drive next week, and notice will be given in advance of that closure.

Progress Report: Dean’s has crossed Van Buren Street and continues to install transmission main north of the intersection of 48^th Ave and Van Buren St. In addition, Dean’s has continued work placing culverts under driveways south of Van Buren Street and has begun restoration work to prepare for reseeding. Today the contractor also began repaving the portions of Van Buren St and the driveways that were removed so that they can be reopened.

Upcoming Work:

The contractor hopes to open Van Buren Street and 48^th Avenue south of Van Buren Street by Tuesday, September 24 (weather dependent, see Stage 3 detour below). 48^th Avenue will then remain closed to all traffic from UCHS’s south driveway to north of Van Buren Street. The contractor will continue installing transmission main to the north. Testing of a portion of the transmission main will take place next week.

Unity Christian: Access to Unity Christian will remain only from the 48^th Ave/Port Sheldon intersection (see detour photo below) until late October 2024 when Dean’s anticipates completing construction for the year (and returning back again in late May 2024).

Progress Report:

The contractor has placed water main pipe up to the south side of the intersection with Van Buren St and has continued work to restore the ditch and the culverts that are under the driveways.

Upcoming Work:

The contractor will close the intersection of 48th Ave and Van Buren St on Monday, September 16 first thing in the morning and continue north through the intersection. The Stage 2 detour (see below) will be used for this closure. As a reminder, no access is allowed through the 48th Avenue and Van Buren Street intersection.

The Contractor will cross Van Buren Street with the transmission main and will then test the main later in the week. Restoration work will continue to occur south of Van Buren Street.

Extra Notes:

Unity Christian: beginning before school on Monday, September 16, access to Unity Christian will only be able to be from the 48th Avenue/Port Sheldon Street intersection (see the detour photo below). Unity will only be able to use the 48th Avenue/Port Sheldon Street intersection for getting to/leaving Unity until late October 2024, when Dean’s anticipates completing construction for the year (and returning back again in late May 2024).

As a reminder, police officers will continue to be present to keep the construction site safe from traffic trying to use Van Buren Street and/or 48th Avenue north of Van Buren Street and south of Unity Christian High School.
