Grand Haven Charter Township – Schmidt Heritage Park

Important Information

In 2019, Jim Schmidt donated 67 acres of land to Grand Haven Charter Township to be made into a park. Prein&Newhof is working with Grand Haven Charter Township to design, bid, and oversee construction for Phase One of Schmidt Heritage Park.

This phase is planned to have 12 pickleball courts, six soccer fields, a softball field and a baseball field, a trail around the perimeter of the park, restrooms, shelters, and a parking lot. The entrance to the park will be on Ferris Street across from Hofma Park. Future phases will include two youth baseball diamonds and two softball fields along with more restrooms, shelter, and parking.

This project includes site preparation, removals, and earthwork necessary for the construction of a new park with accompanying sports fields. It will also include supporting facilities such as a restroom building, maintenance building, picnic shelters, large capacity well, electric services & distribution, storm drainage system, irrigation, chips & fines jogging trail with signage, boardwalk crossings, HMA paving, concrete sidewalks, curb & gutter, flagpole, benches, trash & recycling, trees, dune grass, and turf restoration.

Site Work Spring 2022 – June 2023

 

Despite activity slowing down during the winter months and a wet spring, CopperRock has continued to push forward at Schmidt Heritage Park:

  • Plantings around the common areas continue along with irrigation work near the pickleball area, restroom, and other common areas.
  • The Jo-Jo Jogging Trail has been cleared and work is underway with installation of the jogging trail chips and fines.
  • Boardwalks crossing from the main fields into the woods along the Jo-Jo Jogging Trail are nearing completion.
  • Site sidewalk is being completed.
  • Shelters and dugouts are in place.
  • Restroom and maintenance building interior work continues.
  • Startup of the sprinkling system is anticipated soon with work on final preparations for seeding to follow.
  • Fencing continues throughout the site.
  • Ballfield material is in place.
  • GHCT will be installing the Schmidt Heritage Park sign at the entrance soon.
  • Crews have begun work on the restroom and maintenance building. Footings and foundation walls and underground utilities are complete for both.  Masonry block work is underway on the maintenance facility.
  • Irrigation is wrapping up on all of the fields and moving into common areas outside of the fields.
  • Fencing is being installed along Ferris, the baseball field, and other areas within the park.
  • Sidewalk work is ongoing with two crews doing work on site.  Areas near the baseball and softball field are being done, along with sidewalk adjacent to the main parking lot.
  • The baseball field baselines, pitchers mound, and home plate are being constructed.
  • Work at Hofma Park will included base course of paving this week for the expanded parking lot and new entrance.
  • Well installation is nearing completion.
Work Completed in July 2022:
  • Crews completed the widening of Ferris Street and the entrance approach concrete work for both Hofma Park and Schmidt Heritage Park.
  • Path work along Ferris Street connecting to Acacia Drive has commenced.
  • Hofma Park parking lot and entrance drive work is underway.
  • Pickleball courts have been poured.
  • Site grading has continued into the softball and baseball fields.  Topsoil has been placed in the soccer fields along the western portion of the site.
  • Irrigation lines have been installed in the soccer field in the Northwest portion of the site.
  • The irrigation well has been installed.
  • Drives and parking areas have aggregate installed.

Site utility work, including water main and sanitary sewer connection to Sweetbriar Road, is complete with paving:

  • A new entrance road has been constructed and gravel placed, along with a portion of the parking areas.
  • Storm sewer and drainage improvements are being completed.
  • Grading and topsoil placement of the NW soccer fields is complete. Irrigation work has begun for these fields.
  • Site work continues on the remaining baseball and softball fields. Pickleball court construction is anticipated in the next few weeks.
  • Ferris Street work will begin the week of July 11th with entrance road construction and is anticipated to be closed for two weeks.
