Benton Charter Township - Highland Ave; Martin Luther King Dr; Pine St; and Territorial Rd Wastewater System Improvements

Project Information

Benton Charter Township will be replacing sanitary sewer this spring and summer along Highland Ave, Martin Luther King Dr, Pine St, and Territorial Rd. The project will be constructed in coordination with MDOT’s reconstruction of M139. The replacement sanitary sewer will be installed in the roadway of Highland Ave, Martin Luther King Dr, Pine St, and Territorial Rd. Driveway approaches and road pavement will be removed and replaced as necessary to install the sanitary sewer. Construction of sanitary sewer is planned to start in mid-March and finish in September.

Access/Traffic:

Phase 1: Main St at Martin Luther King Dr will be closed, with a detour following N Fair Ave, Territorial Rd, and Urbandale Ave. This closure is expected to last for approximately three weeks. Traffic access to businesses on Main St will remain open. Traffic on Martin Luther King Dr will continue to be maintained with a single lane open. Thru traffic on Pine St will also be closed during this time. Phase 1 is scheduled to start in mid-March.

Phase 2: Main St will be reopened and traffic on Martin Luther King Dr will continue to be maintained with a single lane open. Phase 2 will be completed by mid-April. MDOT’s M-139 construction project will begin at this time in mid-April. Please contract MDOT at (260) 849-1165 or refer to materials available at the Township Hall for more information on the M-139 road reconstruction project.

Phase 3: Martin Luther King Dr and Highland Ave will be closed with a detour following Pipestone Rd and Main St.

Phase 4: Territorial Rd and Pine St will be closed with a detour following Fair Ave and Main St. Pine St will be closed to vehicle traffic during working hours. Please contact the contractor listed below if you have any special need for driveway access accommodations during daytime working hours.

Mail:

Mailboxes will be temporarily removed and relocated as necessary in coordination with the Postmaster General to allow for excavation and maintain mail service during the project.

Garbage Pickup:

Normal trash pickup schedules will remain throughout the project. Township trash pickup is planned for the early morning hours on Tuesdays before construction begins. Residents using private waste hauling services should contact the contractor listed below to provide the property address, name of the waste hauling service, and day of the week when trash pickup normally occurs so that necessary arrangements can be made.

Water Service:

Sewer Service Connections – Property owners will receive new sanitary sewer lateral piping from the roadway to near the right of way line. Temporary disruption to sewer service may be required at times during replacement of individual laterals. Service disruption will be coordinated with the property owners in advance and will not extend beyond normal working hours.

Progress Report:

The intersection at Main St and Martin Luther King Dr has been restored and Main St has been reopened to traffic. Approximately 400 feet of sanitary sewer has been installed on Martin Luther King Dr from Main St to the south.

Upcoming Work:

Sanitary sewer construction will continue on Martin Luther King Dr over the next couple of weeks. A single lane on Martin Luther King Dr between Highland Ave and Main St will remain open until mid-April.

Progress Report:

Construction on the project has begun! Sanitary sewer has been installed across Main Street and concrete has been poured to restore the road. Main St will be reopened to traffic once the concrete has cured sufficiently.

Upcoming Work:

Sanitary sewer construction will continue on Martin Luther King Dr between Main St and Highland Ave over the next several weeks. A single lane on Martin Luther King Dr will remain open until MDOT’s M139 construction project begins in mid-April.
