Important Information

Holland Board of Public Works (BPW), Holland Charter Township (Holland Township), and the Ottawa County Road Commission (Road Commission) will be completing improvements along Lakewood Boulevard, between Lakeshore Avenue and North River Avenue, during the 2022 construction season.

Holland BPW will be installing a new 36-inch water transmission main in Lakewood Boulevard and North River Avenue.

Holland Township will be replacing existing water main and storm sewer in Lakewood Boulevard.

Road Commission will be resurfacing Lakewood Boulevard, between Lakeshore Avenue and 144th (Division) Avenue and between Aniline Avenue and North River Avenue.

Road Commission will be widening Lakewood Boulevard, between Division Avenue and Aniline Avenue, and installing new curb and gutter and storm sewer.

Access/Traffic Control

Emergency vehicle access will be always provided.

Road closures and detours will be in place during construction. Detour routes and closures will be included in future updates.

Caution is advised when driving through work areas.

Mail

The Contractor will make the necessary arrangements with the postal service to assure mail delivery is not interrupted.

Garbage Pick-up

The Contractor will make the necessary arrangements with the appropriate waste management companies to assure garbage pickup is not interrupted.

Water Service

Temporary water shutdowns will be required to connect new water main to existing water mains. Advance notice will be provided prior to shutdowns. Shutdown duration will be limited to the extent practical.

Existing water service lines within the project area may be replaced as necessary to meet current standards. Customers adjacent to the construction area may have their water service interrupted temporarily while the Contractor replaces their service. The Contractor will coordinate with each customer prior to interrupting service.

Work completed/in progress from this past week:

– 36″ transmission main construction progressed to approximately 700 west of 152nd.
– Drilling contractor continues to remove material for pipe installation beneath Pine Creek.
– Water service verification and replacement, as necessary.
– Waukazoo Elementary drives have all been returned to service. All traffic must enter from 160th to the west.
– Road building behind transmission main continues.

 

Anticipated activities for next week include:

– Lakewood will be closed from 144th to River. The hard road closure will be limited from 144th to Aniline. Thru traffic will be detoured to Douglas Ave.
– Continue transmission main construction.
– Drilling contractor will continue to remove material for pipe installation beneath Pine Creek.
– Continue road building behind transmission main construction.
– Water service verification and replacement.
– Dewatering setup.

Work completed/in progress from the past week:

  • 36″ transmission main construction progressed west entrance of Waukazoo Elementary.
  • Pilot hole for Pine Creek crossing was completed. Contractor will start removing material for pipe installation.
  • Road building continued behind the pipe installation.
  • West entrance to Waukazoo Elementary closed. All school traffic has been directed to the east parking lot.

  • Continue transmission main construction, water service verification and replacement, and road building.
  • Continue removing material for HDD pipe installation.
  • Waukazoo school traffic to continue using the east parking lot.

  • Water service verification and replacement, as necessary.
  • Pilot hole for Pine Creek crossing was completed. Contractor will start removing material for pipe installation.

  • West entrance to Waukazoo Elementary closed. All school traffic has been directed to the east parking lot.

  • Water service verification and replacement, as necessary.
  • Continued staging pipe materials.
  • Directional Drill equipment for the Pine Creek crossing arrived on-site and was set up.
  • Large culvert east of Harderwyk Ministries was removed and replaced.
  • Road building began behind the pipe installation.

Anticipated activities for next week include the following:

  • Continue transmission main construction, water service verification and replacement, and road building.
  • Begin pilot hole drilling for HDD.
  • Close west entrance to Waukazoo. All school traffic will be directed to the east parking lot.

  • Continued staging pipe materials.

  • Removal and replacement of large culvert just east of Harderwyk Ministries.

  • 36″ transmission main construction commenced.
  • Installation of some dewatering, where required.
  • Continued staging pipe materials.
  • Pipe manufacturer visited site to review construction methods with contractor.

  • Water service verification and replacement (as necessary).
  • Utility locating.
  • Removal and replacement of large culvert just east of Harderwyk Ministries.
  • Mobilization of some HDD equipment.

Construction of Holland BPW Improvements is starting!

Starting next week, Lakewood Boulevard will be closed to thru traffic between 160th and 152nd and between 152nd and 144th for the next several months. Traffic between 160th and 152nd will be detoured to James Street. Traffic between 152nd and 144th will be detoured to Ottawa Beach Road. 160th, 152nd, and 144th Avenue intersections will remain open for the time being.

Please be safe and use caution when driving through construction zones.

Work anticipated for next week includes the following:

  • Lakewood closure between 160th and 152nd. Traffic detoured to James Street.
  • Lakewood closure between 152nd and 144th. Traffic detoured to Ottawa Beach.
  • Coordination with residents between 160th and 152nd to relocate mailboxes and facilitate garbage pick-up.
  • Grading on either side of Pine Creek for trenchless pipe installation beneath creek.
  • Remove the north lane and some segments of the south lane of Lakewood between 160th and 152nd.
  • Prepare for and possibly start 36″ water main installation.

Lakewood Improvements Open House Slides

To complete this project in a timely matter, we will need your help and cooperation. Your help with the items outlined below will help minimize the time of disturbance in your area, providing for a safer and earlier completion of the project. Thank you in advance for your efforts and patience!

 

Construction Schedule

Construction of improvements is anticipated to begin early March 2022 and will continue into November 2022.

Excavation for water main is anticipated to begin late March 2022 in Lakewood Boulevard near 160th Avenue. Construction will generally progress from west to east with construction concluding at Howard Avenue and North River Avenue.

Road improvements will be completed incrementally after water supply system improvements are completed.

Once work begins, work will generally be conducted between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, with possible work on Saturdays. The watermain work will be completed by Kamminga & Roodvoets, a local contracting firm.

For the safety of all residents and construction crews, we ask that residents stay out of the construction area at all times and to be aware of construction equipment in the area.
