City of Walker - Kinney Avenue Reconstruction

Important Information

Kinney Avenue will be reconstructed from Lake Michigan Drive to Leonard Street. Improvements to the corridor include constructing a center turn lane, adding concrete curb and gutter, replacing the roadside ditches with storm sewer, and adding sidewalk on the east side of the roadway.

Road reconstruction is anticipated to begin the week of April 29 and be complete by the end of September. Construction work will generally be conducted between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with possible work on Saturdays.

Access/Traffic: Kinney Avenue will be closed to through traffic but will stay accessible to residents in the immediate construction area and embedded neighborhoods. There may be times when access will be limited to either north or south as storm sewer is installed. Driveway access may also be interrupted for short periods of time but will be restored by the end each workday. For traffic that does not have a destination within the construction zone, Wilson Avenue will be the posted detour for this project.

Mail: The contractor will make the necessary arrangements with postal service to assure uninterrupted mail delivery. This will likely be with a pool of temporary mailboxes at either end of the project.

Garbage Pickup: The contractor will maintain uninterrupted garbage pickup. Please have your bin at the end of the driveway the night before pickup.

  • Storm sewer mainline from STA 40+50 to the north.  Brenner may drop back to cross the 30-inch water main near #832 Kinney.
  • Castings will be raised up to final grade on the GVSU Private Drive.
  • Continue building road up to gravel within the southbound lane of Kinney Ave. to Edinboro.

  • Concrete curb/driveway/sidewalk improvements are scheduled to begin on Thursday, June 6 between the GVSU Private Drive and Edinboro St.

Martin J. Concrete is scheduled to begin installing concrete improvements on Thursday, June 6 and continue into early next week (weather dependent).  After the concrete curb and gutter is poured, driveways and sidewalk through the drive approaches will be installed shortly thereafter.  For all affected residents on within this area, please refrain from driving over the new concrete curb and approaches for 7 days to allow for proper curing.  During this time, you will need to park on the gravel surface of the new road or a nearby side street.  We appreciate your patience during this time while access is temporarily restricted.  Please call Phil Kamp at 616-522-5900 if you have any questions.

This week’s storm sewer installation operation will be concentrated between #860 and #910 Kinney in the northbound lane. Local traffic seeking to travel through this area should expect delays or seek an alternate route.

The base course of asphalt was paved last week at the GVSU Private Drive.
Work Completed Last Week
  • 30-inch mainline storm sewer from Edinboro Street north to the 30-inch water main crossing near #840 Kinney. Catch basin leads were installed in the southbound lane between Hampton Lane and Marlboro Street.
  • Concrete improvements were installed including the GVSU Private Drive approach, curb repairs within the driveway, and the emergency spillway at the detention basin.
  • Road was built up to aggregate base in the southbound side of Kinney Avenue from the GVSU Private Drive north approximately 300 feet and the northbound side up to the mainline pipe crew near #840 Kinney.
  • The detention basin was restored with topsoil, seed, fertilizer, and mulch blanket after the riprap was installed.
Anticipated Work This Week
  • The 30-inch mainline storm sewer will continue north of the 30-inch water main crossing near #840 Kinney to Imperial Avenue.  The 30-inch water main crossing was skipped for now and the crossing will be completed at a later date (possibly next week).
  • Roadway will continue to be reconstructed back to aggregate base on the southbound lane from approximately 300 feet north of the GVSU Private Drive toward Edinboro Street.
  • Kent Power will continue installing gas services on the east side of Kinney Avenue using the horizontal directional drill installation method.
  • The GVSU Private Drive is scheduled to be paved (base course) on Thursday, May 30.
This week’s construction activities will be concentrated between #790 and #860 Kinney. Local traffic seeking to travel through this area should expect delays or seek an alternate route.

Today’s construction activities will be concentrated between #790 and #832 Kinney. Local traffic seeking to travel through this area should expect delays or seek an alternate route. Over Memorial Day weekend, a lane will be open.

Today’s construction activities will be concentrated between #740 and #832 Kinney (Edinboro St to Imperial Dr). Edinboro St is closed at Kinney Ave. Local traffic seeking to travel through this area should expect delays or seek an alternate route.

  • Storm sewer mainline was installed north past Marlboro Street.
  • The northbound lane on Kinney Avenue was restored back to aggregate base from the GVSU Private Drive to Marlboro St.
  • Kent Power finished installing gas services on the west side of Kinney Ave.
Anticipated Work This Week
  • The 30-inch mainline storm sewer will continue to be installed north toward Edinboro St.
  • On Monday the southbound lane of Kinney Ave. was milled from the GVSU Private Drive to Marlboro St, and the northbound lane was milled from Edinboro St. north approximately to Thornwyk Dr.

  • Kent Power began installing gas services on the east side of Kinney Avenue using the horizontal directional drill installation method.
Local traffic is restricted to one lane (using flaggers) within the northbound lane from the GVSU Private Drive north to Marlboro St.  At Marlboro St. traffic is shifted back to the southbound lane to cross the storm sewer mainline operation near Edinboro St.In addition to the weekly progress updates, more frequent maintenance of traffic updates will begin to be posted on the construction update webpage at preinnewhof.com.  Our goal is to provide approximate locations of daily construction activities affecting local traffic as they change throughout each week.  We appreciate your patience and understanding that local traffic will not always be able to cross past the storm sewer and road building operations and may require following the posted detour around Wilson Ave.  While delays should be expected, access to every house within the project area and nested neighborhoods will be maintained at all times.

Today’s construction activities will be concentrated between #673 and #740 Kinney (Edinboro Street to Marlboro Street). Local traffic seeking to travel through this area should expect delays or seek an alternate route.
