Muskegon Heights - Fifth Street, Summit Avenue to Broadway Avenue

Project Information

The work will involve installing new drinking water mains, valves, hydrants and water service pipes from the street to inside the buildings.  It will also involve drainage improvements and new sanitary sewer main from Summit to Broadway in Fifth Street as well as new curb and gutter and asphalt pavement and sidewalk ramps.

Current tentative schedule is to begin in July 2025 and be completed by mid-November 2025.

Fifth Street, from Summit to Broadway and Summit between 5th and 6th Streets, was paved yesterday and is now considered open to traffic!  Thank you all for your patience and support.  Punchlist work and final restoration efforts are ongoing.

Progress Report:

  • Most of the concrete work (sidewalk, driveway approaches, intersection ramps) are complete
  • Asphalt base course was installed
  • Manhole and valve structures are being raised to the final elevation
  • Topsoil restoration between the sidewalk and curb has begun

Upcoming Work:

  • Complete any remaining concrete work
  • Complete raising structures to the final grade of asphalt
  • Final course of asphalt is tentatively planned for Tuesday, November 4
  • Finish topsoil restoration and seeding
  • Site cleanup and road opening (after paving)

Summit will be closed when crews are working in the street.  Please use the posted detour of 6th Street to Sherman to Peck to go around the site.  For the safety of the workers, please avoid driving through the construction sites.  No on-street parking is allowed in the construction zone. Residents on Fifth Street will have access to their homes and driveways, which will be maintained with gravel.  Access to the rear alleys for Fifth Street residents will also be maintained.

 

Progress Report:

  • Concrete curb and gutter should be complete by the end of day today
  • Road gravel base material is installed and compacted.
  • Some concrete sidewalk has been installed

Upcoming Work:

  • Complete concrete driveway approaches, sidewalk and ramps at intersections
  • Shape the gravel road base for asphalt
  • Broadway intersection will have the first course of asphalt on Tuesday
  • Topsoil restoration will begin after concrete work is done
  • We are tentatively scheduled for the top course of asphalt early in the week of November 3

Note: Access to Broadway site is closed to all, even if it looks open. Please don’t move any of the barricadesThe intersection of Broadway and Baker is open to cross Broadway. Peck is temporarily closed due to the structure adjustments in the intersection. Both Peck and Baker Streets will likely be temporarily closed when the final paving takes place, which will be next week.

 

Progress Report:

  • Underground piping work is complete: All water main and water services are complete, all sanitary sewer main and services are complete, all storm drains are installed
  • Road construction has begun with compacting the subgrade and installation of road base gravel

Upcoming Work:

  • Concrete curb and gutter is currently scheduled for early next week, starting at Summit and working north to Broadway
  • Concrete driveway approaches, sidewalk, and ramps at intersections will be built
  • Continue shaping the new road with gravel road base, compacting it in place, and preparing for asphalt
  • First course of asphalt will likely be the week of October 27
  • Topsoil restoration will begin after concrete work is done

Progress Report:

  • Sanitary sewer main and sewer service replacement should be complete by the end of the day today
  • Water main is installed through the Broadway intersection and is being tested before connecting it to the existing water system
  • Preparation for the last few storm drains to be replaced at Columbia and Fifth and Broadway and Fifth intersections

Upcoming Work:

  • The last underground utility construction should be complete by the end of next week with the road reconstruction and restoration starting to take shape
  • Pending final testing over the weekend, the new water main will be connected to the new system on Monday. No customers should be affected.
  • Water services will be replaced to the new water main for customers between Columbia and Broadway
  • The last remaining storm drains will be installed at Columbia and Broadway on Fifth Street
  • Road restoration will begin with grading and compacting of the sand subbase below the gravel road base material. Gravel road base material will begin to be installed from Summit to Columbia

Please remember that after your water service is replaced, it may look discolored when it is restored. This is normal. Be sure to flush all interior plumbing after water is restored, starting with the cold water in a bathtub.  It also helps to remove the aerator (screen) on the faucet.

  • The new water main was tied in to the existing water system on Summit and 5th Street up to Columbia
  • Concrete curb and gutter have been installed on Summit
  • Gravel road base was installed on Summit and is being prepared for the first course of asphalt to be installed later today
  • New water services have been tapped on the new water main

  • Water services will be replaced in to the homes and connected to the new water main on 5th Street south of Columbia
  • The sanitary sewer main will begin to be replaced at Broadway and work south
  • Water main will be installed on 5th Street from Columbia working north

  • Water main is installed in Summit and in 5th between Summit and Columbia
  • Storm sewer drains have been replaced in Summit between 5th and 6th Streets
  • New water main is undergoing testing to ensure it is safe for connecting to the existing system

Upcoming Work:

  • The installed water main is intended to be tied into the existing water system next Monday, September 8, 2025. This will involve a temporary shutdown of water service to customers on 5th Street, Glendale and Jefferson between Oakwood and Summit. The expected shutdown will be from 8AM to 3PM.  Customers were notified today with a door hanger.
  • Sanitary sewer main will be replaced on 5th Street, starting at Broadway and working south
  • Water main will be installed on 5th Street from Columbia working north
  • Water services will begin to be replaced on 5th Street between Summit and Columbia
  • Concrete curb and gutter will be installed in the disturbed areas of Summit between 5th and 6th Street
  • Road gravel will be placed on Summit and compacted in preparation for paving
  • The first course of asphalt will be installed on Summit before the end of the week
