City of Muskegon - Sanford Street Reconstruction

Important Information

Project will reconstruct 1 mile of Sanford Street from Laketon Avenue to Apple Avenue and will include replacement of the sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer, and water services. Merrill Street from Jefferson Street to Peck Street will be reconstructed as well, including replacement of the sanitary sewer. This project will reduce the road width to calm traffic and improve pedestrian safety.

This project will be constructed in phases, schedule is tentative:

Phase I: Strong Avenue to Apple Avenue, Includes Merrill.  This section will be completed first with a scheduled completion date of June 23, 2023.

 

Phase II: Southern Avenue to Strong Avenue. This section will begin following Phase I and is schedule to be completed by August 25, 2023.

 

Phase III: Laketon Avenue to Southern Avenue. This section may run concurrently with Phase II and is scheduled to be completed by September 29, 2023.

The project has started in full force this week, even through the snow and rain significant progress can already be seen. Reminder to everyone that this is a construction site, please be extra cautious when in the area. Never assume that equipment operators can see you.

 

Work Completed This Week
  • The road surface was removed from Morrall St. to Apple Ave.
  • Curb & gutter and driveway approach removal along Northbound Lane from Strong Ave. to Apple Ave.
  • Terrace area topsoil removal along westside of Sanford from Strong Ave. to Apple Ave.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week
  • Continuation of terrace area topsoil removal.
  • Curb & gutter and drive approach removal along Southbound Sanford St. from Morrall St. to Apple Ave.
  • Sidewalk removal along Westside of Sanford St.
  • Begin placement of new sanitary sewer on Sanford St. starting from Strong Ave. and proceeding to the north.

Construction is expected to start on March 13 for the first phase of the work from Apple Avenue to Morrall Avenue, including Merrill Avenue. A detour route will be posted, and Strong Avenue will be closed throughout the first phase of work. The first phase is expected to be complete by June 9. Tree removal has been completed and, over the next few weeks, the contractor will begin staging equipment and materials at various locations in the area.
