City of Muskegon - Sanford Street Reconstruction

Important Information

Project will reconstruct 1 mile of Sanford Street from Laketon Avenue to Apple Avenue and will include replacement of the sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer, and water services. Merrill Street from Jefferson Street to Peck Street will be reconstructed as well, including replacement of the sanitary sewer. This project will reduce the road width to calm traffic and improve pedestrian safety.

This project will be constructed in phases, schedule is tentative:

Phase I: Strong Avenue to Apple Avenue, Includes Merrill.  This section will be completed first with a scheduled completion date of June 23, 2023.

 

Phase II: Southern Avenue to Strong Avenue. This section will begin following Phase I and is schedule to be completed by August 25, 2023.

 

Phase III: Laketon Avenue to Southern Avenue. This section may run concurrently with Phase II and is scheduled to be completed by September 29, 2023.

This was an extremely busy week.  Concrete was in full swing and the week finished with grading of aggregate in preparation for paving.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • All curb and gutter was completed for Phase III, this completes all curb and gutter for the job!
  • Sidewalk replacement on Phase III continued with most of the sidewalk being completed.
  • Finish grading of aggregate was completed.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Leveling course of asphalt for Phase III is scheduled for Monday morning.
  • Complete sidewalk ramps for Phase III.
  • Raise castings in preparation of top course of asphalt
  • Spread topsoil for phase III.

This week started out quite but ended in a flurry of activity.  Concrete improvements are now in full swing on Phase III and will continue to be the focus for the next week.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Road grading in preparation of concrete for Phase III.
  • Sidewalk replacement on Phase III.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Curb and Gutter for Phase III. (Access to driveways will be limited next week).
  • Complete sidewalk for Phase III.

Last week, all remaining storm sewer was installed for the project. Grading of the sand grade and installation of aggregate base began in preparation of concrete sidewalk and curb installation. This project is winding down quickly with the end in site. Underground work is essentially complete with only a few loose ends remaining.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Completed storm sewer on phase III, this completes the storm sewer for the full job.
  • Completed sanitary sewer abandonment on phase III.
  • Completed road striping on phase II.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Begin concrete walk and curb & gutter placement on phase III.
  • Continue building road on phase III.

This week all work was focused on Phase III with primary work on storm sewer. All water main and sanitary sewer is now complete! Note that a single lane road closure will be implemented on West bound Laketon Avenue starting September 12 which will be in place for the remainder of the project.

  • Completed sanitary sewer sewers on phase III.
  • Worked on storm sewer on phase III, storm is 90% complete.
  • Completed all remaining water services.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Complete storm sewer on phase III.
  • Start grading road and sidewalk for phase III.

This week all work was focused on Phase III with sanitary services and storm sewer. Underground work is nearly complete and road building will start in the next week.

  • Worked on storm sewer on phase III from Larch to Forest.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Complete storm sewer on phase III.
  • Complete sanitary laterals to homes on phase III.
  • Begin grading for sidewalk and prepping to begin building road the week of 9/11.

The big push this week was getting the road in front of the High School ready for the game and the start of school. As of Friday afternoon, Sanford from Southern to Strong is open to traffic! Some work still needs to be completed in this section such as striping and signage but that will not require road closures.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Castings were raised, concrete finished and the Phase II was paved.
  • Topsoil and seeding was completed in Phase II.
  • Sanitary sewer mainline was completed in Phase III.
  • Storm sewer in Larch was installed.
  • Final work was completed to abandon the old water main in Phase III.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Complete the sanitary sewer services in Phase III.
  • Complete signage in Phase II.
  • Work on storm sewer in Phase III.

This was a very busy and productive week. Work focused on road building from Southern to Strong and utility replacements from Laketon to Southern. Even with the rain the curb and gutter was completed, gravel was graded and the first course asphalt was placed! Work next week will start out extremely busy in order to be ready to pave the top course of pavement for Phase II prior to the big game on Friday!

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Public and private side water services on phase III, essentially all water services are complete.
  • Sanitary sewer on Phase III was replaced to just north Larch Street.
  • Curb was completed and work on sidewalk continuted.
  • The first course of new pavement was placed from Southern to Strong.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Complete all sidewalk and drive approaches between Southern and Strong.
  • Raise castings and spread topsoil from Southern to Strong.
  • Pave top course of pavement from Southern to Strong.
  • Continue placing sanitary mainline on phase III and storm sewer at Larch.

Work this week focused on road building from Southern to Strong and utility replacements from Laketon to Southern. Road building is in full swing with the targeted road opening date fast approaching.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Public and private side water services on phase III.
  • Installation of sanitary sewer on phase III started.
  • Placement of curb & gutter and sidewalk on phase II began.  All straight mainline curb has been completed.
  • Various water system improvements were completed on phase III.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Continue placing curb & gutter and sidewalk on phase II.
  • Continue building road on phase II, paving of the first course is schedule for Wednesday, depending on weather.
  • Complete placing public and private side water services on phase III.
  • Continue placing sanitary mainline on phase III.
  • Perform watermain tie-in on phase III on Tuesday.

The focus this past week was on Phase III water services and sanitary sewer, as well as Phase II storm sewer placement and sanitary sewer abandonment.  This week, work will continue on road building and curb & gutter on Phase II, as well as water services and sanitary mainline on Phase III.

  • Complete concrete foundation wall at High School.
  • Continue building road on Phase II.

  • Begin placing curb & gutter and, sidewalk on Phase II.

Work this week focused on finishing utilities in Phase II with some work starting on Phase III. Phase II water and sanitary sewer is complete now and storm sewer is nearly complete.  Roadway construction has begun on Phase II, which will be the primary focus moving forward to have the area cleared for the football season.

  • Contractor began placing new public side water services on Phase III.
  • Continued placing storm sewer on Phase II.
