Important Information

Chandler Drive road reconstruction might begin soon. During this time, Chandler will be closed to all traffic.

By now, residents should have received a letter from Plainfield Township describing the water service connection process. Residents should begin making arrangements with one of the pre-approved contractors for water service installation. At this time, the contractor will help you start the Quotation process. Contact Jeremy Kamp (info below) with any questions about this process.

Residents on the north-south section of Chandler should have received a “Water Service Here” stake. Please place this stake in your yard (near the road) where you would like your water service to go.

We are aware of some issues with mailboxes and with traffic access and safety. Thank you for making us aware of them. We have addressed these issues with the contractor, and we understand they have been addressed. However, if you continue to have any problems, don’t hesitate to contact us.

There will be times that the area in front of your homes is torn up and you will have limited access to your home. Please let us know if you have any special access needs and we will do our best to make arrangements with you.

Plainfield Township – Water System Extension: Herrington Avenue & Chandler Drive & US131 Crossing

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Water main installation continued this week along Chandler and in the US-131 easement. In Chandler, the water main is installed to approximately Terrie Lynn Drive and continues eastward. See project status map.

Water main installation in Herrington is complete except for the two road crossings at Rolling Meadow Drive and Strawberry Farms Drive.

Water main installation in the easement between Herrington and US-131 continues and is nearly complete. The crew that is working on this section should be back on site today.

Dykema and the Plainfield Water Department pressure tested and disinfected the first segment of water main in Chandler, north of Shining Tree.

Water main installation along Herrington, Chandler and in the US-131 easement continued this week. Dykema’s first crew finished installing water main through the swamp area in Chandler, has turned the corner and is now working their way eastward toward Herrington. See project status map.

The second crew is working northward along Herrington and is nearly to the cul-de-sac. Water main installation in Herrington should be complete by the end of this week.

Dykema’s subcontractor, Marksman Construction, completed the bore and jack under northbound US-131 earlier this week. Dykema’s third crew has been working on installing the water main in the US-131 right-of-way and in the private easements west of Herrington. The water main crossing the highway and in the easement should be finished by late this week or early next week.

Water main installation along Chandler continued northward this week. The special pipe arrived mid-week, and Dykema’s first crew is installing the pipe through the low swamp area. The second crew is working northward along Herrington and is approaching Strawberry Farms. A third crew is installing water main in the easement between Herrington and US-131, and also eastward from House Street under southbound US-131. Dykema’s subcontractor, Marksman Construction, installed the steel casing under the southbound lanes of US-131 earlier this week. Today, Marksman is switching the bore pits over to the northbound side of US-131. The bore and jack under northbound is scheduled for next week Tuesday.

What to Expect Next Week (May 11 – 16)

  • The three Dykema crews will continue laying pipe in Chandler, Herrington, and in the easement near US-131.
  • The Marksman crew is scheduled to complete the bore and jack under northbound US-131 by the end of the week. Both shoulders of northbound will be closed for this work, but the two travel lanes will remain open.

Tree clearing is complete. Some wood remains to be hauled out of the easement between Herrington and US-131. Water main installation along Chandler continued northward, and the first crew is now about at the sharp turn by the highway. Dykema skipped over the section through the low swamp area because that requires a special type of pipe. That pipe is being manufactured and will be shipped to the site soon. The second crew is working northward along Herrington and is nearing Rolling Meadow Drive. See status map. Traffic control along US-131 is in place and Dykema’s subcontractor (Marksman Construction) is ready to install the steel casing under the southbound lanes. The casing pipe is scheduled to be delivered to the jobsite today, and Marksman plans to begin the bore and jack operation early next week. The casing is a 36-inch diameter steel pipe that will get pushed under the highway, and the water main will be installed inside the casing for additional protection both for the water main and for the road.

What to Expect Next Week (May 4 – 9)

  • The two Dykema crews will continue laying pipe in Chandler and Herrington. The first crew will be working eastward from the 90-degree bend in Chandler, and the second crew will continue northward in Herrington.
  • A third Dykema crew is expected to start installing water main in the easement from Herrington to US-131.
  • The Marksman crew will commence bore and jack operations under southbound US-131. Both shoulders of southbound will be closed for this work, but the two travel lanes will remain open.

This past Monday, March 23, the Plainfield Charter Township Board of Trustees awarded the “Area 1B” Herrington Avenue, Chandler Drive and US131 Crossing water main construction contract to Dykema Excavators, Inc. of Grand Rapids, Michigan. This contract is one of the first water main projects undertaken by Plainfield Township to provide municipal water to residents affected by PFAS contamination. Construction will include installation of 16-inch water main along Chandler Drive from Shining Tree Drive to Herrington Avenue, then along Herrington Ave. from Chandler Dr. north to the cul-de-sac at US131. It will also include construction of a 16-inch water main through two private easements west of Herrington Ave. and crossing under US131 near the median turnaround. A second contract (“Area 1A”) will install 16-inch water main along House Street from Pine Island Drive to just south of Brent Road and will connect to the Area 1B water main. Bids for the Area 1A contract are scheduled to be opened on April 2. We will have construction updates posted for Area 1A on a separate web-page (link coming soon). Will this project be affected by Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home – Stay Safe” Executive Order 2020-21? Overall, the answer is “no.” Plainfield Township has designated this a critical infrastructure project, so construction will continue as planned. But as we all deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, we ask that residents, contractors and project officials all respect social distancing guidelines and be courteous to and patient with each other. Construction in a developed area is always challenging, but it can go very smoothly if we all work together and communicate regularly. Project Safety Planning – if construction commences before the “Stay Home – Stay Safe” Executive Order expires, we anticipate additional challenges with more adults and children at home than is normal. You and your children may certainly watch the construction, but it is VERY important that you do so from a safe distance. PLEASE talk to your children about safety, and don’t expect the construction crews to watch your children during the workday.

What to Expect (March 30—mid-April)

  • You will not see construction activity for at least a few weeks yet. You may see more activity than normal, though, including survey crews doing construction staking and utility companies marking the location of underground lines.
  • Dykema Excavators has indicated they are anxious to begin construction as soon as possible. We anticipate receiving Dykema’s detailed construction schedule that we can share with residents in the next couple weeks.
  • Behind the scenes, contract documents will be prepared and signed. Dykema will provide material submittals for review and approval. We will hold a preconstruction meeting with Dykema, Township officials and private utilities.
For the duration of this construction project, we will provide regular updates that will inform you of what is happening presently and what you can expect to see coming up, including water main construction, traffic control, project safety, access to homes, etc. Please share this information with your neighbors who may not have email or access to the internet. Please contact any project representative if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for your patience and we look forward to a successful project!
