Plainfield Township – Water & Wastewater System Improvements: Northville Drive

This Week:

  • K&R installed new 8-inch water main along Northville Drive between Lakehurst and Leelanau.
  • Marksman (K&R’s bore & jack subcontractor), is installing a 24-inch diameter steel casing in the sanitary sewer easement just south of Lakehurst today (6/10). This casing is being installed trenchless via a bore & jack and will house the 15-inch sanitary sewer.
  • Northville Drive was closed to thru traffic between Lakehurst and Leelanau.

Next Week:

  • K&R will install new 15-inch sanitary sewer through the bore & jack casing and complete sanitary sewer installation in the backyard easement.
  • Marksman will remove their bore & jack equipment and steel sheeting after the new sewer has been installed.
  • K&R will restore the backyard easement area after the sewer installation is complete.
  • Northville Drive will continue to be closed to thru traffic between Lakehurst Drive and Leelanau Drive.

Please contact any project representative if you have questions or concerns.

If you live on Northville Drive between Lakehurst and Leelanau, your mailbox has been temporarily moved to the intersection of Northville and Lakehurst. Kamminga & Roodvoets (K&R) has set up a bank of temporary mailboxes and coordinated with the USPS to have your mail delivered there until construction in the area is completed and your mailbox can be reinstalled. A temporary bank of mailboxes has also been set up at the intersection of Manitou and Leelanau. This is in preparation for when construction begins on Leelanau and mailboxes are removed in the coming weeks. If you live on Leelanau, once your mailbox is moved your mail will be delivered to the temporary mailboxes on Manitou.

K&R will work with your trash hauler to maintain service during construction. If the end of your driveway is inaccessible by your trash hauler due to the location of the construction activity, K&R will move your trash cans from the end of your driveway to a central location where they can be picked up and return your cans by the end of the day. You should place your garbage cans at the end of your driveway the night before your scheduled pickup date and K&R will move them if needed to ensure that they are picked up.

If you have any questions or issues with mail or trash services, please contact one of the project representatives and we will work with you to get it resolved.

This Week:

  • K&R began removing sidewalk and driveways on the north side of Northville Drive, between Lakehurst and Leelanau, in preparation for water main construction to begin.
  • K&R set up temporary bypass pumping systems in preparation for bore & jack construction next week so that sanitary sewer flows can be pumped around the work area during construction.
  • K&R began locating existing utilities in preparation for construction to begin in earnest next week.

Next Week:

  • Marksman (K&R’s bore & jack subcontractor), will be working on setting up for the sanitary sewer bore and jack in the easement at Lakehurst.
  • K&R will work on installing new 8-inch water main on Northville Drive.
  • Northville Drive will be closed to thru traffic between Lakehurst Drive and Leelanau Drive.

Please contact any project representative if you have questions or concerns.

This Week:

  • The existing asphalt road was pulverized on Friday in preparation for construction to start on Tuesday after the holiday.
  • Marksman (Kamminga & Roodvoet’s bore & jack subcontractor) started moving in their equipment in preparation for construction to start next week.

Next Week:

  • Kamminga & Roodvoets (K&R) will be on site Tuesday to start water main and sanitary sewer construction.
  • Northville Drive will be closed to thru traffic between Lakehurst Drive and Leelanau Drive.

Please contact any project representative if you have questions or concerns.

This Week:

  • Trees were removed as necessary along Northville Drive and Leelanau Drive.

Next Week:

  • Due to a delay on another project, the existing asphalt road in Northville, between Lakehurst and Leelanau, will be pulverized on Friday, May 27, in preparation for water main construction to begin on May 30. This will push the start date for construction back one week.

Please contact any project representative below if you have questions or concerns.

This Week:

  • Utility companies were marking the existing underground utilities within the project area.
  • Prein&Newhof survey crews were staking the new utilities.

Please do not remove the flags or stakes in your yard; if they are removed it will only delay the project. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Next Week:

  • Tree clearing will take place first half of next week.
  • The existing asphalt road in Northville, between Lakehurst and Leelanau, will be pulverized end of next week in preparation for water main construction to begin on May 23.

Please contact any project representative if you have questions or concerns.

Current Status/Progress Report

Kamminga & Roodvoets (K&R) is scheduled to be on site in two weeks. The week of May 16 will include removal of trees in the road right-of-way which are necessary to install the water main, as well as removal of the existing asphalt which is necessary for the storm and sanitary sewer installation. K&R will be relocating mailboxes to a central location and setting up to start construction in the utility easement near Lakehurst.

Expect to see construction stakes and colored flags showing up in your yards in the next two weeks. Do not remove any of the flags or stakes, as they are marking existing underground utilities and providing information on where the new utilities are to be installed.

Please contact any project representative below if you have questions or concerns.

Current Status/Progress Report

Kamminga & Roodvoets (K&R) intends to start construction of this project in the middle of May 2022. A tentative project timeline is shown below for reference. Construction will generally progress from southwest (Lakehurst) to northeast (5 Mile Rd).

Once work begins, work will generally be conducted between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday, with possible work on Saturdays.

For the safety of all residents and construction crews, we ask that residents stay out of the construction area at all times and be aware of construction equipment moving throughout the project area.

K&R will always maintain access for local traffic and emergency vehicles. There will be short periods of time when utilities are being installed in front of your houses and your driveway will be inaccessible. K&R will work to restore driveways as soon as possible during the day and will ensure that all driveways are accessible by the end of the workday. Generally, the immediate work area will be impassible during work hours. See photo below for what a typical sanitary sewer construction work area looks like. Caution is advised while driving through the project area.

Sewer and water service will be maintained throughout construction. However, temporary water shutdowns will be required to connect new water main to existing water mains and to connect new water services to each home. Plainfield’s Water Department will provide advance notice prior to water main shutdowns. K&R will coordinate with individual homeowners when water services are temporarily disconnected and reconnected to the new service.

Please contact any project representative if you have questions or concerns.

Progress Update

This project was intended to be completed this year (2021). However, due to the large workload and demand on contractors in West Michigan, Plainfield Township became aware that not many contractors had availability left this year and/or that the project cost could come in significantly higher than planned. As a result, the Township allowed contractors to bid on the project for construction in 2021 and/or 2022. On April 26, 2020, the Plainfield Charter Township Board of Trustees awarded the contract to the low bidder, Kamminga & Roodvoets (K&R) of Grand Rapids, MI. The low bid came in below construction cost estimates, but K&R has indicated that their plan is to complete the construction in 2022.

Please contact a project representative if you have questions or concerns.

What to Expect

  • Construction will commence on site in the Spring of 2022.
  • Updates will be posted here weekly once construction starts.

Progress Report

This project is under final design. We plan to advertise the project for bidding in late March and open bids in late April. At that time, contract award will be considered by the Township Board, with construction to commence thereafter.

This project will replace old utilities that are nearing the end of their useful life, including water main, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer. The entire road will be reconstructed, and sidewalks will be replaced as needed. The project area is shown on the map.

For the duration of this construction project, we will provide regular updates that will inform you of what is happening presently and what you can expect to see coming up, including water main construction, traffic control, project safety, access to homes, etc.
