Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center - Pump Station L & Force Main Replacement

Project Information

The Muskegon County Resource Recovery Center is replacing a wastewater pump station and force main located in Sherman Boulevard between Temple Street and Park Street. The project will include temporary closure of westbound Sherman Boulevard and Temple Street.

The contractor, Jackson-Merkey Contractors, plans to begin work in April 2025 and complete the project by November 2025.

Access/Traffic:

Emergency vehicle access will be maintained.

Local business access will be maintained and coordinated with the contractor.

There may be times when access will be limited to your business during construction activities. Contractor to coordinate alternate parking locations.

Detour routes are shown in the map at the top of the page.

Mail:

Temporary mailbox location may be installed. Contractor will coordinate with local businesses.

Garbage Pickup:

Contractor will be responsible for coordinating with waste haulers to allow continued pickup service during construction, and will transport local business waste containers to and from a centralized location as necessary.

Progress Report:

  • Most of the exterior concrete has been poured, including sidewalk, curb and gutter, generator pad, and driveway.
  • The road has been paved.
  • Vinyl siding and the plywood ceiling have been installed.
  • The electricians have completed most of the interior electrical equipment installation and wiring and set the generator.

Upcoming Work:

  • The chain link fence will be installed.
  • Painting will be completed.
  • Pump station startup is scheduled for November 19, after which the site will be graded and restored with topsoil and grass seed.
  • Bypass pumps will be removed and Temple Street reopened after the pump station has completed a trial period of 1-2 weeks.

Progress Report:

  • Progress continued on the Pump Station L building this week. The building walls will likely be completed by the end of the day today.
  • The electrician has installed all conduit and boxes in the masonry for future receptacles, equipment, and lighting.

Upcoming Work:

  • The trusses, plywood sheathing, and metal roof will be installed next week.

Progress Report:

  • The building foundation walls and footings were poured (see attached photo).
  • By today, the wall forms will be stripped and the walls backfilled.

Upcoming Work:

  • The masonry crew will mobilize over the weekend and begin laying masonry next week.
  • Plumbing and electrical work will continue in preparation for pouring the building floor slab.

Progress Report:

  • The wet well, valve chamber, and upstream manhole have been installed.
  • All gravity sewer, discharge piping, and valves in and between the structures have been installed and successfully tested for leaks.
  • The site has been prepared for the building foundation.
  • The existing force main is being abandoned with flowable fill today.

Upcoming Work:

  • Formwork and steel installation for the building foundation will likely begin next week, followed by installation of underground plumbing and conduit.

As a reminder, Temple Street continues to be closed at Sherman, and the pump station will remain on bypass into October.

Progress Report:

Gas and electric services were disconnected this week, and Jackson-Merkey began demolition.

Pump Station L is now on bypass.

**Temple Street is now closed at Sherman and will remain closed for the next couple of months.**

Upcoming Work:

Jackson-Merkey will begin removing the structures on Monday when their slide rail system is delivered.

It will likely take them most of the week to get the slide rail in place and remove the existing can structure before they can start placing the new wet well.

Progress Report:

  • Last week the road was paved and pavement markings were placed.
  • Sherman Boulevard is now open between Temple and Park! Temple Street is also open next to the lift station.
Upcoming Work:
  • Now that the force main installation is complete, Jackson-Merkey will be offsite for several weeks until they receive the remaining lift station equipment. Additional updates will be provided once they are closer to starting lift station demolition.

Progress Report:

  • The concrete base course and aggregate base have been placed and graded in preparation for paving.
  • Concrete curb and gutter were poured.
  • The gravity sewer was successfully air tested.

Upcoming Work:

  • Next week, the road will be paved.
  • Updates regarding reopening of the road will be shared when available.

Progress Report:

  • The water service for the pump station building was installed.
  • The new force main was successfully pressure tested.
  • The road subbase was graded and compacted.
  • The gravity sewer is being installed today.

Upcoming Work:

  • Concrete base course and aggregate base will be placed in preparation for repaving the road.

Progress Report:

  • All 600 feet of HDPE force main and the force main discharge manhole have been installed in Sherman Boulevard. Jackson-Merkey is working on backfilling the force main today.
  • The bypass connection for the future lift station has been installed.

Upcoming Work:

  • The casing under the railroad will be filled with flowable concrete.
  • Concrete restraint collars will be poured on each end of the force main.
  • The force main will be pressure tested and backfill will continue.

Progress Report:

  • Jackson-Merkey removed portions of the road and excavated their bore pits on either side of the railroad.
  • The 16-inch steel casing was installed underneath the railroad.
  • HDPE pipe fusing began.

Upcoming Work:

  • Jackson-Merkey will install the force main through the casing and west toward Temple Street.
  • After the force main is installed, the casing will be filled with grout and the pipe will be backfilled.
