Plainfield Charter Township - Wastewater System Extension - Saddle Ridge

Project Information

Plainfield Charter Township is extending its wastewater system to serve the Saddle Ridge neighborhood and the newly constructed Rockford Public Schools Edgerton Trails Elementary School in Algoma Township. A new lift station and force main will be constructed to pump the wastewater from the Saddle Ridge neighborhood to an existing trunk sewer near the Wolven Avenue and 10 Mile Road intersection.

Force main construction is expected to take place in the summer and fall of 2024. Lift station construction is expected to start in the fall of 2024 and be completed in the winter of 2025. Final restoration around the lift station site will take place in the spring of 2025.

Access/Traffic:

Traffic will be maintained along the force main route throughout construction, but single lane closures will be necessary to construct the force main. Traffic delays can be expected in the immediate area of force main construction.

Mail:

The contractor will work with residents and the USPS/delivery services to maintain delivery throughout construction.

Garbage Pickup:

The contractor will work with residents and waste haulers in the area to maintain service during construction.

Progress Report:

The new lift station is up and running! Wastewater is no longer flowing to the old wastewater treatment plant building and it is all flowing into the new lift station. Dean’s has completed all of the pipe work associated with this project and will work on restoration around new new lift station in the next two months as weather allows.

Upcoming Work:

  • The new generator will be installed next to the new lift station when it is delivered around the end of February.
  • Dean’s will complete remaining concrete work around the new lift station in late February or early April once the frost is out of the ground.
  • The access driveway will be paved in April.
  • Dean’s will complete landscape restoration around the new lift station.

The pumps have been delivered! Dean’s will be on site this week to complete internal plumbing of the lift station and install the pumps. There is a small section of deep gravity sanitary sewer that will have to be installed after the lift station work is completed. Once everything has been installed and tested the new lift station will be started up later this month.

Unfortunately, some of the new lift station materials have been delayed again, so the new lift station will not be operational until early 2025. Construction has continued however near the lift station over the last few weeks. DVT Electric has been installing conduits and pouring concrete for the new lift station control panel. Once the new control panel has been installed, Consumers Energy will then run a new power service to the control panel.

Dean’s Excavating anticipates they will receive the remaining lift station materials in January 2025. Once these materials are on site Dean’s crew will be back to complete the lift station piping. After the new lift station piping is installed and tested, Dean’s will install the remaining gravity sanitary sewer to redirect the wastewater flows to the new lift station.

Final restoration around the new lift station will take place in the Spring of 2025.

Progress Report:

Materials for the new lift station have been delayed due to multiple factors outside of Dean’s control. Dean’s now plans to begin work again around the new lift station in early December with hopes of starting up the new lift station by the end of the year.

Dean’s started pumping wastewater through the new force main this week with a bypass pump installed near the new lift station. The pump and haul operation from the existing treatment plant is no longer necessary. Paving along Wolven Avenue was completed, and Dean’s is working on wrapping up restoration work. Wolven Avenue will be opened to traffic by the end of the week.

Pumps for the new lift station are scheduled to arrive in early November. Dean’s will complete work around the lift station in November. The new lift station should be operational by early December pending electrical service installation.

As of this week Dean’s has installed all of the force main pipe south of 10 Mile Road. Dean’s also spent this week working on some piping at the lift station site in Saddle Ridge and inside the air release chambers along the force main route. Dean’s will be testing the last section of force main pipe over the next few days. Pending passing test results, Dean’s will complete the final force main connections along Wolven early next week. By the end of next week, the goal is to have wastewater pumped through the new force main by an electric bypass pump which will be installed at the existing wastewater treatment plant in Saddle Ridge. Once this bypass pump is up and running there will be no need for the pump and haul operation. This means the tanker trucks will stop making daily trips into Saddle Ridge. The bypass pump will stay in operation for the next few months until Dean’s receives the lift station materials and can install the pumps and control panel.

This Week:

  • After all of the existing utilities were located along 10 Mile Road, the last directional drill was completed this week. The force main was installed under 10 Mile Road and only about 300 feet of force main is remaining to be installed!
  • Dean’s completed a pressure test on a portion of the new force along Wolven Avenue.
  • Dean’s continued the process of connecting the drilled sections of pipe together with couplers and setting an air release manhole along Wolven Avenue.
  • Paving was completed along Wolven Avenue near Hopewell Drive.
Next Week:
  • Dean’s crew will complete the remaining force main installation along the Premier Park driveway. This section of force main is deep and therefore installation will be slow.
  • The driveway to the West Michigan Archer Center will be closed for a few days next week while the force main is installed across it.
  • Pending weather, force main installation should be complete by the end of next week.
  • Testing will then take place on the last section of force main the week of October 7.
  • Final force main connections can then be completed after the testing

This Week:

  • Force main construction continued along Wolven Avenue. The pipe has been installed to just south of Stoneridge.
  • The force main discharge manhole was lined with a cured-in-place liner to protect the concrete against sewer gases.
  • Dean’s continued the process of connecting the drilled sections of pipe together with couplers.
  • Dean’s worked on some piping around the lift station site on Friday.
Next Week:
  • The force main will be installed across 10 Mile Road next week.
  • 10 Mile Road will have a lane closure on the southern eastbound lane Monday (9/23) morning so that existing gas mains under the road can be verified prior to drilling past them.
  • Dean’s pipe crew will continue to test the next section of the force main and install air release structures along Wolven Avenue.

This Week:

  • Force main construction continued along Wolven Avenue. The pipe has been installed to just north of Bent Tree Ridge.
  • Dean’s completed testing of the force main pipe in Elstner Avenue and 11 Mile Road.
  • Dean’s reseeded the disturbed areas in Saddle Ridge where last week’s thunderstorm washed away most of the fresh seed. Residents are encouraged to water the newly seeded areas daily to promote good grass growth.

Next Week:

  • De Witt Trenching will continue to directionally drill force main pipe along Wolven Avenue between Bent Tree Ridge and 10 Mile Road.
  • Dean’s pipe crew will be back on site and work on installing an air release structure along Wolven Avenue, just north of Hopewell Drive, and connect the drilled sections of pipe together.

This Week:

  • Force main construction continued along Wolven Avenue.
  • The remaining force main was installed along Elstner Avenue. Dean’s will be back after the pipe is pressure tested to install the air release structure at the north end of Elstner Avenue.
  • Dean’s installed the air release structure on 11 Mile Road.
  • The thunderstorm that came through middle of the week washed away a majority of the seeding Dean’s completed last week along Edgerton Avenue and in the Saddle Ridge neighborhood. Dean’s will work on getting these areas reseeded as necessary in the coming week.

Next Week:

  • De Witt Trenching will continue to install force main pipe along Wolven Avenue between Prestonwood Drive and Stoneridge Drive.
  • Dean’s pipe crew will not be on site next week.
