City of Whitehall – 2020 Road Construction

The 2020 road construction work that was planned to be completed by September 1, 2020 is now complete!

Work that took place this past week:

  • Grading and paving of both courses of asphalt was done on Baldwin between Colby and Spring Streets
  • The final course of asphalt was placed on Mohawk
  • The final course of asphalt was placed on Baldwin between Elliott and Alice Streets near Ealy School

We are now moving to the punch-list phase where we will finish restoration issues and touch up some other areas that need attention. Some sites still need the pavement markings restored as well. This will be the last update for this year on these projects. Please contact Dan Sorek if you have any issues that need to be resolved.

Thank you all very much for your patience and cooperation during this important infrastructure improvement.

Work that took place this past week:

  • Several manhole castings and water main valve boxes were adjusted for new pavement grades
  • Mohawk was graded, shaped and the first course of asphalt was placed
  • Baldwin between Colby and Spring was graded and shaped for new pavement
  • Baldwin between Elliott and Alice was graded, shaped and the first course of asphalt was placed
  • Alice between Mears and Division was resurfaced
  • Benston between Mears and Division was resurfaced
  • Clean up began at Collier, Carleton and Country Club

Here is what to expect next week, the week of July 27:

  • No work will take place tomorrow Saturday, July 25, 2020
  • Baldwin between Colby and Spring will be final graded and prepared for pavement. Hopefully, both courses can be scheduled next week
  • Schedule and weather permitting, place the final course of asphalt on Baldwin near Ealy School and on Mohawk
  • Restoration of all areas disturbed with continued cleanup and preparation of a punch list

Shhhh….  We are ahead of schedule to have all construction complete by September 1, 2020, but please remember that all of the work is weather dependent.  If all goes well next week and the schedules and weather align for the paving subcontractor, we could be substantially complete with this project a month EARLY.

Work that took place this past week:

  • The final course of asphalt was placed on East and West Collier, Country Club between Gee and Lake Street and Carleton north of the Country Club
  • Asphalt driveway approaches were replaced
  • Hydro-seeding and restoration was completed. Please remember to continue to water these areas which will help keep the weeds from establishing.
  • Milling operations began today to remove the old pavement at the following locations:
    • Mohawk
    • Baldwin between Elliott and Alice
    • Baldwin between Colby and Spring
    • Alice between Mears and Division
    • Benston between Mears and Division

Here is what to expect next week (July 20–24):

  • No work will take place tomorrow Saturday, July 18
  • The areas being milled today will be graded and prepared for new asphalt
  • Some blocks will receive new gravel road base material
  • It is possible that these blocks could be resurfaced with new asphalt by the end of the week.

Shhhh….  We are ahead of schedule to have all construction complete by September 1, 2020, but please remember that all of the work is weather dependent.

The contractor will work with the US Post Office and local garbage haulers to ensure that mail gets delivered and refuse is picked up on the scheduled day. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there are any issues with either.

Work that took place this past week:

  • Manhole and valve structures were adjusted for the final course of asphalt. Please be careful driving over these.  They should have barrels on them.
  • The first parts of restoration outside the pavement took place with gravel shoulders and top soil for yards.
  • Concrete driveway approaches were poured and are curing.

Please do not be alarmed if you see water holding in some of the drainage structures as they may still have fabric on them to prevent soil from washing into the pipes and into White Lake.  That said, we understand the new drains worked well with the amount of rain the area received this past week.

Here is what to expect next week, the week of July 13, 2020:

  • No work will take place tomorrow Saturday, July 11, 2020.
  • The top course of asphalt is planned to be completed before the end of the day on Tuesday, July 14.  If all goes well, it could be completed the afternoon of Monday, July 13.  Please be aware and plan accordingly.  It the weather stays good, it will be Monday afternoon for paving.
  • Those with asphalt driveway repairs needed will be done first, then the roads will be paved.
  • Hydro seeding of areas that received topsoil this week is currently scheduled for Thursday, July 16.
  • Traffic control signs and barricades should be removed by the end of next week.
  • This should conclude the work on Collier, Carleton and Country Club with only punchlist work remaining.

We do not yet have a schedule for the milling and resurfacing of the other streets below:

    • Mohawk
    • Baldwin between Elliott and Alice
    • Baldwin between Colby and Spring
    • Alice between Mears and Division
    • Benston between Mears and Division

We are still on schedule to have all construction complete by September 1, 2020, but please remember that all of the work is weather dependent.

The contractor will work with the US Post Office and local garbage haulers to ensure that mail gets delivered and refuse is picked up on the scheduled day. Please do not hesitate to contact us if there are any issues with either.

Work that took place this past week – it was a short week due to the Memorial Day Holiday:

  • Storm Drainage pipe and infrastructure were installed up the Country Club hill to just short of Carleton
  • All storm drainage pipe and infrastructure were installed in East and West Collier
Crews stopped just short of Carleton as there is a utility pole at the NW corner of Carleton and Country Club that will need to be supported. This will be done Monday morning, June 1, 2020. This work WILL CLOSE Carleton for a few hours in the morning. It will not be closed first thing, but if you need your vehicle or need to get out, we recommend you park your vehicle on Country Club or near Gee Park.

Here is what to expect next week (week of June 1):

  • Carleton will be closed Monday morning for a few hours to hold a pole and install new storm drainage pipe.
  • Storm drainage should be completed in Carleton
  • Temporary water main and connections installed for the residents on West Collier. This will involve short interruptions of water for less than an hour to tie each service over to the temporary water main
  • New permanent water main will be installed in West Collier.
  • Testing may begin on the new water main, but service connections will likely be the week of June 8
Two weeks in, but we are still on schedule to have all construction complete by September 1, 2020, but please remember that all of the work is weather dependent.
