City of Muskegon - Wilcox and Thompson Reconstruction

Important Information

The City of Muskegon is making a significant infrastructure investment in the City’s Beachwood-Bluffton Neighborhood. Work will consist of replacement of the water main, water services, storm sewer, sanitary sewer and roadway on Thompson, Wilcox, Edgewater (Wilcox to Thompson) and Walnut Streets.

In addition, water services will be replaced into the homes on Plum Street, Cherry Street, and Edgewater Street from Lakeshore to Thompson. This project will be completed in phases which are shown in the map.

This week the water service crews were back onsite, more sewer connections were completed and Wilcox roadway was crushed. Focus is starting to turn to rebuilding Thompson and starting utilities on Wilcox.

Work Completed This Week

  • Water services were replaced on Thompson and Walnut.
  • Sanitary sewer services were completed on Walnut and Thompson, all sewer work is now complete in this phase.
  • Restoration was started on Edgewater however this is only temporary and will be readdressed later.

Anticipated Work

  • Water service replacement will continue on Thompson and Walnut.
  • Sanitary sewer replacement in the Walnut and Wilcox intersection will begin, this intersection has a lot of utilities criss-crossing each other that needs to be untangled.
  • Dewatering systems will be installed on Wilcox in preparation for utility installation.

Please note, topsoil and seed was spread on Edgewater this week. Repairs to irrigation will be coming later and the topsoil will be re-raked and seeded at that time.

This was another busy and productive week with a lot of work beging completed on Edgewater and Walnut. As work is wrapping up on Edgewater construction on Wilcox will begin.

Work Completed This Week

  • Drive approaches were completed on Edgewater.
  • Final grading and paving of the first course of pavement on Edgewater from Wilcox to Thompson.
  • Sanitary sewer was completed on Walnut and Thompson.
  • Water main installation was completed on Walnut and Thompson and testing of the main has begun.

Anticipated Work

  • Water main testing will be completed and connection of the main to the water system will be completed early week.
  • Water service installation on Thompson and Walnut will begin.
  • Paving of the top course of asphalt on Edgewater is scheduled for Tuesday.
  • Removal of the roadway on Wilcox is scheduled for Thursday. The removal will consist of crushing the roadway which turns the roadway into gravel. This gravel will remain in place over the weekend.

Once final paving is completed on Edgewater between Wilcox and Thompson, Wilcox will be closed to through traffic. All traffic into and out of the neighborhood must use Edgewater.

This week was a very productive week despite the weather delays. Work was completed on water main, sanitary sewer, road grading, sidewalks, and curb. Rebuilding of Edgewater is in full swing with completion around the corner.

Work Completed This Week

  • Concrete sidewalk replacement was completed on Edgewater between Thompson and Wilcox.
  • Curb and Gutter was placed on Edgewater between Thompson and Wilcox.
  • Sanitary sewer was installed on Walnut, about 100 ft of progress was made on the sewer.
  • Water main installation was completed on Walnut to approximately 2/3 of the way to Wilcox.

Anticipated Work

  • Water main installation will continue on Walnut and Thompson towards Plum. Testing for this main may begin near the end of the week.
  • Work on sanitary sewer will continue with services on Thompson.
  • Concrete drive approaches will be placed on Edgewater.
  • Final grading of aggregate will be completed on Edgewater.
  • The first course of asphalt will be placed on Edgewater between Thompson and Wilcox. If time allows the top course will be placed too. Note this pavement will be placed to include the east half of the Edgewater and Wilcox intersection, the west half will remain gravel until Wilcox is completed. Pavement will extend up through the Thompson and Edgewater(south) intersection.

Please do not write in the concrete or drive across it until the contractor indicates that you may.

Underground work on sanitary sewer continued last week down Thompson as well as final connections of the water main on Edgewater to the new system. Road building of Edgewater began with preparing the sand subgrade and starting placement of aggregate.

Work Completed This Week

  • Edgewater water main final connections were made.
  • All remaining water services were completed on Edgewater between Thompson and Wilcox.
  • Sanitary sewer was installed up to Walnut Street on Thompson.
  • Road building began on Edgewater.

Anticipated Work

  • Sanitary sewer installation will continue north on Walnut Street.
  • Aggregate placement on Edgewater through the Thompson and Edgewater south intersection.
  • Concrete work including curb and gutter will begin on Edgewater.

With the beginning of concrete work on Edgewater, access to driveways will not be able to be maintained until the concrete cures. Make sure your any vehicle that will need to be used over the next week is removed from your driveway impacted by the work prior to installation of the curb. Please do not write in the concrete or drive across it until the contractor indicates that you may.

This week saw completion of the majority of the water services on Edgewater between Thompson and Wilcox, sanitary sewer installation, water main installation and storm sewer installation on Thompson.

Work Completed This Week

  • Water main was connected at Thompson and Edgewater.
  • Installed sanitary sewer west from Cherry.
  • Water services on Edgewater are 90% complete.
  • Installed storm sewer on Thompson from Edgewater to Edgewater.

Anticipated Work

  • Continue sanitary sewer towards Plum and possibly turn the sewer up into Walnut.
  • Complete water services.
  • Start rebuilding roadway on Edgewater from Thompson to Wilcox.

This was another busy week of utility work. Work focused on sanitary sewer and testing of the water main on Edgewater.

Work Completed This Week

  • Completed water main installation from Edgewater to Cherry on Thompson. Completed pressure testing and cleaning of water main.
  • Installed sanitary sewer from Edgewater to Cherry on Thompson.

Anticipated Work

  • The water main will be connected to the existing system at one location.
  • Water service installation will begin approximately mid-week. Installation will occur on Edgewater between Wilcox and Thompson.
  • Sanitary sewer installation will continue on Thompson towards the west.
Underground pipe installation continued in Edgewater, placing water main and storm sewer at the Wilcox intersection. Next week work will continue in Edgewater installing sanitary sewer main and water main.

Work Completed This Week
  • Installed sanitary manholes and laterals in the alley.
  • Installed portions of water main and storm sewer on Edgewater.

Anticipated Work

  •  Sanitary sewer installation on Edgewater.
  • Continued work of water main in Edgewater.

Underground pipe installation is in full swing with significant progress being made in the Edgewater and Wilcox intersection.

Work Completed This Week

  • Installed sanitary sewer, water main and portions of storm sewer in the Edgewater and Wilcox intersectoin. This has been a slow process due to the amount of utilities in the ground and maintaining access for residents on Edgewater.
  • Completed the bore and jack installation in the alley between Walnut and Cherry. Work on connecting the services is ongoing.

Anticipated Work

  • Sanitary sewer and water main installation on Edgewater.
  • Continued work in the alley for final connection of services.

This week work was primarily focused on preparation for larger activities. Actual pipe installation has not begun yet but will begin his coming week.

Work Completed This Week

  • Installed dewatering systems on Edgewater and at the Alley on Thompson.
  • Constructed an access pit on Thompson for installation of the sanitary sewer in the alley between Walnut and Cherry. This will be used to push a steel pipe into the alley which will ultimately have the final sanitary sewer pipe inserted through it. This limits impact to the alley where the excavation would be deepest.

Anticipated Work

  • Installation of the bore and jacked casing in the alley.
  • Installation of water main and sanitary sewer on Edgewater.

Work on this project has begun. Focus in the first week has been on site preparation, removals and locating existing utilities. The next week will focus on setting up dewatering systems and work in the alley between Walnut and Cherry.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Removed the road surface on Edgewater, Thompson and Walnut.
  • Worked on removals for sidewalk, drive approaches and curb and gutter.
  • Completed preparation work for a boring pit at the alley between Walnut and Cherry.

Anticipated Work

  • Installation of dewatering on Edgewater and Thompson.
  • Boring and Jacking of a casing pipe into the alley between Walnut and Cherry. This casing will have a sanitary sewer inserted through it later in the project, this will allow installation without disturbing the nearby houses and garages.
  • Installation of water main on Edgewater may begin near the end of the week.
