Pencils Sharpened for 2017 MATHCOUNTS Local Competitions

On Friday, February 3, local middle school students will compete in the local chapter  2017 MATHCOUNTS competitions. Two of P&N’s engineers Jim Kirkwood, PE and Tom Wheat, PE are coordinating these competitions on behalf of their MSPE (Michigan Society of Professional Engineers) Local Chapters.

Jim Kirkwood, MSPE Western Chapter Chairman, is overseeing the 2017 MATHCOUNTS competition between 100 students from 12 schools at Grand Valley State University’s Eberhard Center in downtown Grand Rapids. Tom Wheat, MSPE MATHCOUNTS Coordinator, is overseeing the competition between 103 students from 12 schools at Western Michigan University’s Bernhard Center in Kalamazoo.

Prein&Newhof strives to support our communities and is active in our professional associations. By giving our time to encourage young people to excel in math we feel that we are helping to inspire the next generation of problem solvers.

The MATHCOUNTS Foundation hosts a national program each year that provides opportunities for middle school students to compete in live, in-person contests alongside each other. Educators register their schools for the program in the fall and begin the competition the following January. There are four levels of competition – school, local chapter, state, and national. Between one and ten students from each school advance to the local chapter event. Those who succeed at the local chapter event will advance to the state competition, held on March 11.
