Tributaries along Hart-Montague Trail get New Culverts and Bridge

Contractors have just installed a new bridge and two culverts over Carleton Creek, a trout stream crossing the William Field Memorial Hart-Montague Trail.

Below is a photo of one culvert before it was installed. The former culverts were interrupting fish passage. The new culverts are wide enough to accommodate for the stream’s flow and restore the ability for fish to swim upstream.

Background Information

The William Field Memorial Hart-Montague Rail Trail crosses Carleton Creek—a tributary of White River—three times. The crossings’ culverts were original to the railroad construction in the early 1900’s. In 2011, a fisheries study recommended replacing these culverts because they hindered fish passage.

MDNR, MDOT, and nearby communities cooperated to fund and reconstruct the Hart–Montague Trail. During the construction process they realized they had project funding available to replace the old culverts. With the path already at the construction stage, time was limited to complete a design and to obtain the needed permits.

Since P&N had designed another culvert replacement in the same area a few years prior, the parties asked Prein&Newhof to help out. The City of Hart retained Prein&Newhof for topographic survey, soil borings, geotechnical review, peak-flow hydraulic modeling, and bridge and culvert design.

P&N’s design included:

  1. A 50–foot clear span bridge replacing twin culverts. Watch the bridge being installed.
  2. An aluminum structural plate culvert (pictured above) that is three times the size of the previous 48–inch–diameter culvert.
  3. A corrugated metal pipe culvert that is four times the size of the former 30–inch–diameter culvert on a tributary to Carleton creek.

Prein&Newhof also prepared the MDEQ Inland Lakes and Streams Permit application that’s required for projects within Michigan’s waterways.
