Cannon Township - Cannon Trail Shared Use Pathway: Kies Street and Hickory Drive

Important Information

This much anticipated gap in the Cannon Trail is now under construction! This section will connect to the path at the end of Hickory Drive and extend to the existing pathway at the corner of Kies Street and Courtland Drive. Upon completion of this section, the Cannon Trail will extend all the way from downtown Cannonsburg to the border with the City of Rockford on 10 Mile Road!

Construction is anticipated to begin the week of August 24, 2026, and be wrapped up by mid-November 2026. The contractor plans to start in Luton Park and work east to Hickory Drive, and then in a few weeks start working west to Courtland Drive.

Tree removal is expected to begin on August 31, 2026.

Access/Traffic:
While no long-term lane closures are anticipated, shoulder closures will be frequent all along Kies Street during construction. Please be safe: Let’s all slow down and give the contractor room to work!

November 6, 2026

Progress Report:

This week, Brenner has started the process of wrapping up the project by making last minute fixes to the path and finishing out with topsoiling it. M&S installed ADA ramps, and they will most likely have concrete driveways installed by the end of the day today where all concrete portions of the path will have been completed. Crosswalks have also been installed along the path this week where the final remaining crosswalk will be complete next week.

Upcoming Work:

Brenner plans on hydroseeding and completing a couple of checklist items next week. The boardwalk on Kies is nearly finished. Riverworks will continue construction, planning to wrap up once final construction materials are received.

November 2, 2026

Progress Report:

Last week Black Gold Asphalt completed paving of the remaining sections of the path on Friday. Brenner Excavating finished grading the entire path and began restoration, reseeding portions of the corridor. Brenner also started on the finishing details at Luton Park, including installation of benches, a bike rack, and a bike repair station. Riverworks Construction has nearly completed the boardwalk, with mesh fencing the only remaining item.

Upcoming Work:

Riverworks expects to finish the boardwalk early this week once the fencing is installed. Brenner will continue restoration work along the path and anticipates wrapping up by mid November.
October 23, 2026

Progress Report:

Riverworks Construction continued work on the boardwalk this week. The headwall and wingwalls are complete on the west side and nearly complete on the east side, and crews have started installing decking, posts, and rails. Brenner Excavating completed the fifth retaining wall on the trail west of Rum Creek and is currently installing block for the fourth wall near the intersection of Blakely and Kies Road.

Upcoming Work:

Riverworks will continue boardwalk construction into next week. Brenner expects to finish the remaining retaining walls this week and complete wall capping next week. Brenner also plans to finalize grading on the remainder of the path so it is ready for paving next Friday October 30th.
October 16, 2026

Progress Report:

Brenner Excavating placed topsoil over completed portions of the path this week and finished construction of a large block wall on the east side of Rum Creek. Riverworks Construction continued boardwalk work, completing installation of the remaining support beams and braces and beginning to install joists and posts.

Upcoming Work:

Next week Brenner plans to install two remaining block walls west of Rum Creek, finish grading out remaining sections of the path, and relocate the Luton Park information kiosk. Riverworks will continue boardwalk construction into next week.

October 9, 2026

Progress Report:

Brenner Excavating has nearly finished grading and laying gravel across the entire remaining portions of the pathway and completed removal of curbs and partial concrete driveways along Kies Street this week. Brenner also completed installation of several of the segments of retaining wall and is currently installing yet another block wall along the west side of the path near the Courtland and Kies intersection. Black Gold Transport made significant paving progress — completing base and top course on Hickory Drive, base and partial top course through Luton Park, and base course on the west end of the path near the Courtland. Riverworks Construction continued working on the boardwalk, installing joists this week. M&S installed concrete ADA ramps at Hickory Drive and across from Hickory, and added a concrete lookout pad at Luton Park, with additional ramp installations underway.

Upcoming Work:

Brenner will install a final retaining wall along Kies Street and continue grading the remaining sections of the path. They will also begin the restoration along Hickory Drive. Riverworks will continue boardwalk construction. Black Gold will return once additional sections of the path are ready for paving.
October 2, 2026

Progress Report:

Brenner excavating has almost completely graded and graveled the bike path on Kies, where focused efforts have been on installing storm structures throughout the path and retaining block walls this week. One retaining wall has been complete near Oakview Ridge and the other wall is currently being constructed a couple of properties East. Riverworks has completed pile driving for the boardwalk and is now focusing efforts on installation of structural support

Upcoming Work:

Brenner plans on continuing to install retaining walls into the upcoming week. Riverworks will continue boardwalk construction into next week. As an additional note, paving on Hickory Drive and Luton Park is set to begin on Monday at 8:00 AM.

September 25, 2026

Progress Report:

Brenner has nearly completed grading, placing and compacting of the subgrade along the entire path. Additional work has also continued along Hickory Drive, where areas are being prepared for HMA paving. The Boardwalk Subcontractor Riverworks has begun construction of the boardwalk and has nearly completed pile installation.

Upcoming Work:

Brenner will continue compacting and placing aggregate in several additional areas along Hickory Street. Paving is scheduled to begin Thursday along Hickory Drive through Luton Park. Riverworks will continue boardwalk construction next week.

September 18, 2026

Progress Report:

Brenner Excavating continued grading and aggregate placement west of Luton Park on Kies Street this week and has nearly finished removing topsoil through to the Kies and Courtland intersection. Two culverts were also installed along Luton Park. Riverworks Construction has also mobilized on site this week ahead of upcoming boardwalk work.

Upcoming Work:

Brenner Excavating will continue grading and topsoil removal into next week. Riverworks will begin boardwalk construction once the boardwalk stakes are installed.
September 11, 2026

Progress Report:

Alpine Tree Removal has completed all tree removals on Kies Street, clearing the way for Brenner Excavating to continue for pathway construction ahead. Brenner Excavating has been removing topsoil along Hickory Drive this week and has also begun laying gravel on the path.

Upcoming Work:

Next week the contractor will finish laying gravel on Hickory Drive and then shift operations to Kies Street, where topsoil removal will begin to prepare that section of the path for construction.
September 4, 2026

Progress Report:

Brenner Excavating made great progress this week, tilling and grading a significant stretch of the pathway from the edge of Luton Park all the way to the Hickory Drive intersection. Tree removals are also well underway on Kies Street, with Alpine Tree Removal expected to complete that work by next Wednesday.

Upcoming Work:

Next week Brenner Excavating will continue tilling and grading, pushing into the Hickory Drive section. Alpine Tree Removal will also be wrapping up tree removals on Kies Street, clearing the way for pathway construction to follow.
