City of Kentwood - Shaffer Avenue and 36th Street Resurfacing and Roundabout Construction

Important Information

For this project, Shaffer Avenue (between 32nd Street and 44th Street) and 36th Street (between Shaffer Avenue and Broadmoor Avenue) will be repaved and a roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Shaffer Avenue and 36th Street. Construction is expected to begin on June 1, 2026 with completion by the end of September.

Access/Traffic:

During construction, the intersection of Shaffer Avenue and 36th Street will be closed to traffic. Shaffer Avenue north and south of the roundabout, as well as 36th Street east of the roundabout, will also be closed to through traffic, but will remain open to for local traffic only. Construction personnel and cones will direct you on how to reach your property. Emergency services will always have access to your property.

Mail:

The contractor will work with the post office and other shipping services to provide adequate access to your property to ensure uninterrupted mail delivery

Garbage Pickup:

Trash will continue to be collected on your regular day, but you may need to place your container(s) in a specific place (such as the other side of the road) for access by your waste hauler. Contact your waste hauler with questions about where you should place your containers if the area around your property is especially disturbed. Ultimately, the contractor is responsible for making sure trash can be collected.

Progress Report:

The project has shifted to construction activities along Shaffer Avenue, both north and south of the new roundabout. Bridge work progresses at all three bridges while existing asphalt has been removed south of 36th Street. Top course asphalt has been placed on 36th Street from Shaffer Ave to Broadmoor Ave (M-37).

Upcoming Work:

Aggregate base grading on Shaffer Ave, south of 36th Street, will continue in preparation for new asphalt pavement in the coming weeks. As this work progresses, work will begin to shift to Shaffer Ave north of 36th Street for similar work items.

Progress Report:

Construction progress continues for the future roundabout at the intersection 36th Street and Shaffer Ave. The roundabout is taking shape with the placement of the concrete pavement and curb and gutter.

Upcoming Work:

36th Street asphalt from Shaffer Avenue to M-37 Broadmoor is anticipated to be removed July 17 with the first course of asphalt to be placed the following Tuesday, July 21. Work along Shaffer Avenue from 44th Street to 32nd street will begin at the substantial completion of the roundabout.
