City of Muskegon - Catherine Avenue Reconstruction

Important Information

The City will be reconstructing Catherine Avenue from Irwin Avenue to Wood Street, including new water main, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer. Water services will be replaced into the residences.

Access/Traffic:
Traffic to homes will be maintained with short term interruptions during work in front of the residence. Notification will be provided prior to interruptions of access.

Mail:
Mail delivery is not expected be impacted by the project.

Garbage Pickup:
Please have garbage bins at the curb the night before pick-up. The contractor will relocate bins if necessary to allow for pick-up.

Water Service:
Water service will be temporarily interrupted at times. Notification will be provided to those who will be impacted prior to interruptions.

Work Completed Last Week
  • Water main was installed on Catherine from Irwin to Terrace.
  • Water main was pressure tested, flushed and chlorinated on Catherine between Irwin and Terrace.
  • Sanitary laterals were installed on Catherine working from Terrace towards Arthur.
Anticipated Work This Week
  • Sampling and testing of water main placed on Catherine.
  • Continue sanitary lateral installation.
  • Begin storm sewer installation on Catherine between Terrace and Irwin.

Work on Catherine continues this week with sanitary lateral installation and water main installation between Irwin and Terrace.

Work Completed Last Week

  • New water main was tied-in to the existing system in Butler Street following all testing.
  • Turf restoration began at Butler Street.
  • Sanitary Sewer main was installed on Catherine between Irwin and Terrace.
  • Sanitary lateral installation began on Catherine

Anticipated Work – Butler

  • Continue turf restoration will begin toward the end of the week.

  • Begin installation of water main on Catherine, with an expected start date of Monday 3/16.

March 10, 2026

Water main installation will be completed on Butler Street and restoration will begin this week. Work on Catherine will consist of sanitary sewer main and lateral replacement.

 

Work Completed Last Week

  • Water Main was installed and pressure tested on Butler Street. The road surface on Catherine was removed between Irwin and Wood.  Concrete curbs and driveways were removed between Irwin and Terrace.

Anticipated Work – Butler

  • Water main sampling and tie-in to the 24-inch and 6-inch water mains.
  • Turf restoration will begin toward the end of the week.

Anticipated Work – Catherine

  • Sanitary Sewer installation between Terrace and Irwin.
  • Sanitary lateral installation between Arthur and Irwin following pressure testing.
February 27, 2026

Tree removal is now complete and the real work can begin. Water main installation will begin on Butler Street in the early week. Work on Catherine will consist of pavement removal, concrete removals and preparations for sanitary sewer replacement.

Work Completed This Week

  • Trees were removed on Catherine and Butler in preparation of utility work.

Anticipated Work – Butler

  • Water main installation will take place in the early week.
  • Testing of the new water main will start near the end of the week.

Anticipated Work – Catherine

  • The road surface is scheduled for removal on Tuesday March 3. Temporary gravel access to residents will be maintained.
  • Concrete curb and drives will be removed Wednesday, March 4 through Friday, March 6.
  • Preparation for utility work will be ongoing throughout the week.
February 20, 2026

The snow is melting, which means construction season has arrived! Work on Butler and Catherine are scheduled to begin shortly, the anticipated schedule is below.

Butler Schedule

  • Tree removal will begin February 20.
  • Water main installation on Butler Street will begin the week of March 3. Work on Butler is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

Catherine Schedule

  • Tree removal will be completed during the week of February 20.
  • Road removal is anticipated to start the week of March 2 with sanitary sewer and water main installation following.
  • Catherine Avenue work is anticipated to be complete near the end of July.
