Georgetown Charter Township - 48th Ave Transmission Main Phase 2

Important Information

Georgetown Charter Township will be constructing a new 24-inch water transmission main on 48th Ave from north of Port Sheldon St to Baldwin St and on Baldwin St from 48th Ave to Fox Meadow Dr. In addition to the water transmission main project, there are three other projects in the area whose project limits and schedules overlap the transmission main project, and brief updates on those projects will be found here as well. J&H is constructing sanitary sewer in 48th Ave from north of Port Sheldon St to north of Rush Creek; Blendon Township is constructing water main in Tyler St from 48th Ave to Tyler Pines Dr; and the Ottawa County Road Commission is constructing a roundabout at the intersection of 48th Ave and Baldwin St.

The transmission main project is anticipated to occur in three stages starting in April of 2026 and working through November of 2026. Roads will be closed to through traffic but will remain open to residents.

Access/Traffic:

The Georgetown Charter Township water transmission main project is broken down into the stages below. The additional projects from Blendon Township, J&H Oil, and the Ottawa County Road Commission may have additional traffic impacts beyond what is detailed here. Progress Report:

  • The contractor connected the water transmission main to the tie-in point at the end of the last phase just north of Port Sheldon. The contractor has continued to construct water main to the north of Rush Creek, working their way towards Tyler St.
  • Work on the sanitary sewer project is still on hold for the time being but is complete except for the crossing of Rush Creek and final tie-in.
  • The road remains closed to through traffic and should not be used except for local traffic only. Local traffic should proceed with caution and be mindful of the workers present.

Upcoming Work:

  • In the coming weeks the contractor will install a valve and test the portion of the water main that they’ve constructed so far.
  • The contractor will continue to reconstruct and grade 48th Ave where the water main has been constructed to prepare for eventual paving.
  • The contractor also plans to finish the sanitary sewer crossing of Rush Creek in the coming weeks.

Note: We ask the public to respect the workers and the closed road. Police will continue to be present to safe working conditions and to ensure the road is only being used sparingly by those who live or work on this road and not by though traffic.

Progress Report:

Water main installation continues southward towards the tie-in point at Port Sheldon, which the contractor expects to reach near the end of this week. The contractor is also continuing to rebuild the road by installing and grading sand and gravel on the west side of 48th Avenue south of Rush Creek.

Work on the sanitary sewer project is still on hold for the time being but is complete except for the crossing of Rush Creek and final tie-in.

The road remains closed to through traffic and should not be used except for local traffic only. Local traffic should proceed with caution and be mindful of the workers present.

Upcoming Work:

Once the contractor has reached the tie-in point at the Port Sheldon intersection, they plan to shift north of Rush Creek and continue laying water main towards Baldwin. The shift is expected to occur near the end of the week. The contractor will continue grading the 48th Avenue south of Rush Creek following that shift.

The contractor plans to shift back to the sanitary sewer project and complete the Rush Creek crossing once the contractor has installed more water main north of Rush Creek. This is expected to occur within the next couple of weeks approximately.

Note:

We ask the public to respect the workers and the closed road. Police will continue to be present to safe working conditions and to ensure the road is only being used sparingly by those who live or work on this road and not by though traffic.

Progress Report:

The contractor installed the 24-inch water main pipe in the bore and jack casing. Water main fittings and valves were installed north and south of Rush Creek. The contractor is continuing northward with water main pipe installation. 48th Ave. remains closed to through traffic due to the extent of operations.

Sanitary sewer has been completed from Port Sheldon Street to south of Rush Creek. The contractor is currently working on the water main and will also start placing sand subbase and aggregate base on the west half of 48th Avenue between Rush Creek and Port Sheldon Street.

Upcoming Work:

The contractor will continue installing water main northward next week and restoring the west side of 48th Avenue as well. A date has not yet been determined for the crossing of Rush Creek to the north with the sanitary sewer.

Note:

We ask the public to respect the workers and the closed road. Please be mindful of construction haul routes, as incoming and outgoing trucks may temporarily block the road. Police will continue to be present to ensure safe working conditions and to ensure the road is only being used sparingly by those who live or work on this road. Through traffic is not permitted.

Progress Report:

The contractor completed the bore and jack operation to install casing pipe under Rush Creek on Wednesday and is continuing to excavate the receiving pit to install the water main pipe. The hard closure of 48th Ave. is still in place due to the extent of operations near Rush Creek.

The contractor is preparing the tie in point for the sanitary sewer. Afterwards, they will continue installing sanitary sewer southwardly to connect to the tie in.

Upcoming Work:

After the receiving pit is excavated, the contractor will work to install the water main inside the casing pipe underneath Rush Creek. The water main will be installed early next week. The contractor plans to have the sanitary sewer finished by the middle of next week. After that, the contractor will continue with water main construction between Rush Creek and Port Sheldon.

Note:

We ask the public to respect the workers and the closed road. Police will continue to be present to safe working conditions and to ensure the road is only being used sparingly by those who live or work on this road and not by though traffic.

Progress Report:

The contractor has begun excavation for the bore and jack operation under Rush Creek. Wet weather caused delays with excavating the pits for the bore and jack equipment. The extent of operations for the bore and jack requires a full, hard closure of 48th Ave.

The contractor continues to construct the sanitary sewer to the south to the tie in point.

Upcoming Work:

The contractor is continuing to dig bore pits to be able to install the casing under Rush Creek. They plan to have the bore and jack of the casing finished by the end of the week. The contractor hopes to have the sanitary sewer finished by the end of this week or early next week. After that, the contractor will continue with water main construction.

Note:

We ask the public to respect the workers and the closed road. Police will continue to be present to safe working conditions and to ensure the road is only being used sparingly by those who live or work on this road and not by though traffic.

Progress Report:

The contractor continues to install sanitary sewer towards the south to tie into the sanitary sewer that was constructed last year north of Port Sheldon Street.

Upcoming Work:

The contractor plans to begin the bore and jack operation for water main this week under Rush Creek for the water main and will be mobilizing today. The bore and jack operation will require a full, hard closure of 48th Avenue at Rush Creek.

Note:

We ask the public to respect the workers and the closed road. Police will continue to be present to safe working conditions and to ensure the road is only being used sparingly by those who live or work on this road and not by though traffic.

Progress Report:

The contractor has milled 48th Ave south of Rush Creek and has milled the east side of the road up to Tyler St and is working to maintain adequate access for residents and businesses in the construction zone.

Upcoming Work:

The contractor will begin installing sanitary sewer this week south of Rush Creek and will work their way south to tie into the sewer that was installed last year just north of Port Sheldon St. In addition, the contractor will begin a bore and jack operation under Rush Creek ahead of the water main installation. The bore and jack operation will take place next week beginning on Monday. This will result in a full, hard closure of 48th Ave at Rush Creek.

Note:

We ask the public to respect the workers and the closed road. Police will continue to be present to safe working conditions and to ensure the road is only being used sparingly by those who live or work on this road and not by though traffic.

Progress Report:

The contractor has closed down 48th Ave between Port Sheldon and Tyler St and has placed detour signs to route traffic away from the construction area. This week the contractor also installed soil erosion control measures, and they’ve also milled 48th Ave where work will take place during Stage 1 to prepare for excavation work next week.

Upcoming Work:

The contractor will begin installing sanitary sewer in 48th Ave south of Rush Creek next week. Work will progress towards the south to tie-in to the work completed last year. Once the sanitary sewer is tied into the south, the sanitary sewer will be installed across Rush Creek and tie into the north. The contractor anticipates completing the work on the sanitary sewer around the beginning of May. Once the work on sanitary sewer is complete, work will begin on the 24-inch water transmission main.

Note:

We ask the public to respect the workers and the closed road and that they be aware that police will continue to be present to ensure safe and effective working conditions. Drivers will be stopped and ticketed if found attempting to use the 48th Ave north of Port Sheldon Street.
