City of Muskegon Heights - 2026 Road & Water Main Construction

Important Information

The work will involve replacement of water mains, valves, hydrants, and water services in the street, including new road where the water main is reconstructed. New ramps and sidewalks will also be constructed where they are disturbed for the work.

Garbage Service:
Customers are encouraged to add a piece of tape to their cart and to clearly write their address on their cart. Service will remain and the Contractor will assist with getting your cart picked up and returned on your regular garbage days if the road in front of your home or business is inaccessible to garbage trucks.

Mail Service:
Post deliveries will be maintained throughout the project.

Access/Traffic:
Work will result in full closure within the construction areas as noted on the map shown. Follow the updates for specific closure dates. Broadway Avenue detour will be Glade to Summit to Peck Street.  Temple and 6th Streets will be open as much as possible to cross Broadway. • The new water main is installed in Broadway between 9th Street and 5th Street with connections to the existing system at 7th Street, 8th Street, and 9th Street.  Customers are being connected to the new water main between 9th and 5th Streets.

Upcoming Work Planned for Next Few Weeks:

  • Water mains will be tied in at Broadway and 6th Street on Monday, April 27, 2026. This will mean a temporary water disruption for all customers on 6th Street between Summit and Sherman between 8 AM and 4 PM.  Water should be turned back on before the end of the day. If the water is cloudy, that is air trapped in the lines. Please be sure to flush all of your water fixtures and clean the aerators on your faucets. It is best to flush the Cold water in a bathtub first because there is typically no aerator there, and it will move the most water. Be sure to remember to flush outside spigots as well now that the weather is improving.
  • Sanitary sewer manholes will be replaced in the intersections of Broadway between 9th and 5th Streets
  • Additional water main work will occur on 6th Street between Manahan and Sherman
  • Storm drain work will take place on Broadway between 9th and 5th Streets
  • Water service lines will be replaced on Broadway between 8th and 5th Streets
  • Concrete curb and gutter and sidewalk will be installed on the north side of Broadway between Glade and Temple starting Monday, April 27, 2026. Access to businesses will be CLOSED for the entire week to allow for the concrete to cure before traffic can be allowed to drive over the concrete.
  • Water service replacements are happening all over the City as part of the Lead Service Line Replacement program
  • Storm drains will be replaced in the intersection of Howden and Delano after the water main is replaced.
  • Water main will be replaced in the intersection of Wood and Delano after the work in Howden is complete. The contractor will ‘leap frog’ every other intersection and then go back and finish each so that there are not 2 intersections closed at one time on Delano until paving operations.
