City of Muskegon Heights - 2026 Road & Water Main Construction

Important Information

The work will involve replacement of water mains, valves, hydrants, and water services in the street, including new road where the water main is reconstructed. New ramps and sidewalks will also be constructed where they are disturbed for the work.

Garbage Service:
Customers are encouraged to add a piece of tape to their cart and to clearly write their address on their cart. Service will remain and the Contractor will assist with getting your cart picked up and returned on your regular garbage days if the road in front of your home or business is inaccessible to garbage trucks.

Mail Service:
Post deliveries will be maintained throughout the project.

Access/Traffic:
Work will result in full closure within the construction areas as noted on the map shown. Follow the updates for specific closure dates. Broadway Avenue detour will be Glade to Summit to Peck Street.  Temple and 6th Streets will be open as much as possible to cross Broadway. Otherwise, all other side streets will be closed at Broadway. Thru traffic will be prohibited in all construction areas.

November 6, 2026

Progress Report

  • Amsterdam Avenue: The first course of asphalt was installed, and structures are being adjusted for the final course of asphalt now. THE ROAD IS CLOSED. DO NOT go around the barricades.
  • Norton: Water main connections were completed at Glendale and Jefferson. Preparation work is taking place for large valve installations next week at Park and Jefferson.
  • Lead Service Lines: Roughly 75 lead water services were removed from the system in Waalkes, Howden, and Riordan this week.

Upcoming Work Planned for the Next Few Weeks:

  • Amsterdam: Final asphalt is planned for next week, and the road will be reopened before the end of the week.
  • Norton: Large valve installations will take place on Monday, November 9, 2026. This will involve shutting down a large water transmission main in Norton Avenue between Park and Peck Streets. Residents can expect to lose water for several hours on Monday while these valves are installed. Affected customers were notified today.
    Concrete curb and gutter and sidewalk ramps will be installed at the intersections of 5th/Seminole, Jefferson and Glendale and gravel road base will be installed. Paving on Norton is scheduled for the end of November.
  • Lead Service Lines: Another 30 lead water service lines are scheduled for removal next week, most of them in the 2000-2500 blocks of Riordan. Asphalt patching of past lead service line removals will be done late in the week, weather depending.

Progress Report

  • Amsterdam Avenue: Road gravel base material has been installed and is being shaped and prepared for asphalt next week. Topsoil areas were hydroseeded.
  • Norton: Storm drain lines in the Seminole and Norton intersection have been installed. Several water services were replaced.
  • Lead Service Lines: Roughly 85 lead water services were removed from the system in Waalkes and Howden.

Upcoming Work Planned for the Next Few Weeks:

  • Amsterdam: Asphalt paving is scheduled for mid-week next week – weather permitting. Structures will be adjusted to the new pavement elevation after that.
  • Norton: Continue water service work in Seminole and complete the new storm drain installation at Norton and Seminole. More water services and water main connections will take place in Norton between 5th and Jefferson.

Progress Report

  • Amsterdam Avenue: Topsoil was installed
  • Norton: Water main in Seminole was installed, and testing is underway before connection to the City system. Water main connection at 5th and Norton was completed.
  • Lead Service Lines: Additional services are being replaced in the City near Waalkes, north of Norton and in Howden, south of Keating

  • Amsterdam: Grading and paving
  • Norton: Complete the water main connection in Seminole at Norton, begin water service installations on Seminole. Water services will be replaced on Norton between Park and Jefferson. Roadway will begin to be removed on Norton, east of Seminole and 5th Street to Jefferson.

  • Oakwood Avenue: This project is complete, and a punch list is being worked on.
  • Amsterdam Avenue: Concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk ramps, and driveway approaches have been installed
  • Reynolds: This project is complete, and a punch list is being worked on.
  • Norton: New water main was installed at the intersection of Norton and Park. Removals at the intersection of Seminole/5th and Norton took place and water main is being installed. Seminole is closed to thru traffic between Seaway and Norton.
  • Delano, between 5th & Jefferson: Concrete has been poured and is now awaiting asphalt restoration
  • Lead Service Lines: Additional services are being replaced in the City near Waalkes, south of Broadway.

  • Amsterdam: Grading, paving, and topsoil restoration
  • Norton: New water main will be installed in Seminole, south of Norton and new water main connections at 5th Street. Water services will be replaced on Norton between Park and Jefferson. Roadway will begin to be removed on Norton, east of Seminole and 5th Street to Jefferson.

Fall is officially upon us, but there is still work to be done! Here’s a brief update on drinking water and road improvements in Muskegon Heights.

 

Progress Report

  • Oakwood Avenue: Structure adjustments and preparation for final paving.
  • Amsterdam Avenue: Underground utilities are complete and preparations are being made for road reconstruction
  • Getty Tank: Cellular antennae continue to be transferred back to the tank.
  • Norton: Traffic control signs were posted and notices sent to residents who will have service line replacements

September 18, 2026

Progress Report

  • Oakwood Avenue: Waiting for better weather to get final asphalt and restoration completed.
  • Amsterdam Avenue: Sanitary sewer manhole replacement is complete, and storm drains are being replaced.
  • Reynolds: Waiting for better weather to get final asphalt and restoration completed.
  • Barney and Hovey, East of Fifth Street: Waiting for better weather to get final asphalt and restoration completed.
  • Getty Tank: The water tower is back in service, and cellular antennae are being transferred back to the tank.
  • Lead Services: Roughly 70% of the City’s lead service lines have now been replaced. There will be a short break in the replacement action for a few months.

September 11, 2026

Progress Report

  • Oakwood Avenue: First course of asphalt was placed at most intersections.
  • Amsterdam Avenue: Sanitary sewer manholes were installed, and storm drains are beginning to be replaced.
  • Reynolds: Temporary road restoration took place on Reynolds at Hackley and Delano.
  • Barney: Water main removal in the alley between 5th and Jefferson took place after water main connections at 5th and Hovey.
  • Lead Services: Over 30 more lead service lines were removed this week and crews have been busy patching roads where needed from the service line replacements.

Upcoming Work Planned for the Next Few Weeks:

  • Water service replacements continue to happen all over the City as part of the Lead Service Line Replacement program, but at a slower pace for the next few months than the last 2 months.
  • Oakwood: Structure adjustments, final paving and restoration for the road to be opened by the end of next week.
  • Amsterdam: Complete storm drain replacement and connections and begin rebuilding the roadway between 6th and Reynolds.
  • Reynolds: Pavement restoration of the intersections of Hackley and Delano
  • Getty Tank: The tank will be returned to service and new security gates installed. Cellular equipment and antenna will be transferred back to the tank from the temporary cell tower.

**Norton**: A new project will begin in the next few weeks on Norton between Park and Jefferson Streets, with water service replacements and a new water main in Seminole, south of Norton. The team will install new water main connections and valves at several intersections on Norton Avenue. This will be the last major project to take place.

September 4, 2026

School is starting, and most of the water and road construction is finishing in Muskegon Heights.  No work will take place on Monday, September 7, due to the Labor Day Holiday. Here is a brief update:

Progress Report

  • Oakwood Avenue: Concrete curb, ramps, and driveway approaches have been poured. Grading and preparation for asphalt. The intersections of Waalkes and Lemuel on Oakwood are still closed while crews are grading and preparing the areas for asphalt next week.
  • Amsterdam Avenue: Sanitary sewer manhole was replaced at 5th Street on the deep sewer interceptor in Amsterdam.
  • Getty Tank: Painting and tank improvements are nearly 100% complete. The project is now in the cleanup and punch list phase. The logos were completed last week and the final painting was completed.
  • Reynolds: New water main valves were installed, and water main connections took place on Reynolds at Hackley and Delano.
  • Lead Services: Over 1,000 lead service lines have been removed in Muskegon Heights so far in 2026. Over 3,000 lead service lines have been removed from the City’s inventory since we began tracking them in 2018.

Upcoming Work Planned for the Next Few Weeks:

  • Water service replacements continue to happen all over the City as part of the Lead Service Line Replacement program.
  • Oakwood: Asphalt paving, structure adjustments, and then the final course of asphalt. Weather permitting, road should be reopened on or around 9/11/2026.
  • Amsterdam: Sanitary sewer manholes will be replaced in the intersections of Glendale and Jefferson on Amsterdam. New storm drains will be installed, then grading for road gravel, concrete curb and gutter, then asphalt.
  • Reynolds: Pavement restoration of the intersections of Hackley and Delano
  • Getty Tank: The tank will be refilled, and new fencing will be installed. Cellular equipment and antenna will be transferred back to the tank from the temporary cell tower.
