Muskegon County - East Side Water Main Replacements

Important Information

This project is a replacement of current water main located on East, West, Center, and Densmore Streets in Muskegon Charter Township.

The work will involve replacing aging drinking water mains, valves, hydrants, and water service pipe from the street to the property line. Replacement of the disturbed roadway, drives, and lawns will be completed as well.

Work will be on the following streets:

  • East Street, Vine to Apple (September to November of 2023)
  • Center Street, Southland to Apple (Spring of 2024)
  • West Street, Southland to Apple (Spring of 2024)
  • Densmore Street, Marvin to Marquette (November to December of 2023)

 

Roads will be closed to through traffic but open to residents.

December 8, 2023

This week underground work on Densmore was completed. The roadway has been restored for the winter. No additional work is anticipated until spring.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Final connections of the new water main to the system were completed at Wesley, James and Marquette.
  • All remaining water services were completed.
  • Gravel was placed on the roadway for the season, final aggregate surface will be placed in the Spring.

 

Anticipated Work

  • Final road grading on Densmore and lawn restoration on Densmore and East will be completed in the Spring.
  • Water main work on West and Center Streets will occur next year, start dates have not been determined yet. Notificaiton to residents will be sent out once schedules are known.
December 1, 2023

The focus this week was on water services on Densmore Street. At this time all services are completed. Houses with meter pits will have their meter pits replaced in the Spring.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Water services on Densmore were completed.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week on Densmore (All dates below are weather dependent)

  • Connection of the new water main to Wesley Street will occur on December 5. This will interrupt water service for residents on Wesley Street between Sheridan and Densmore.
  • Connection of the new water main to James Street will occur on December 6. This will interrupt water service for residents on James Street between Sheridan and Densmore and residents on Densmore from Wesley to James.
  • Connection of the new water main to Marquette will occur on December 7. No service interruption is expected for this work.
  • Restoration of roadway will start near the end of the week.
November 20, 2023

The focus this week was on East Street with paving of the roadway. Work will shift to Densmore again for the next few weeks.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Roadway grading and topsoil placement on East Street.
  • The leveling and surface course of asphalt road was placed.

 

Anticipated Work This Week

  • Aggregate shoulder will be placed on East Street.
  • Completion of topsoil placement on East Street.
  • Connection of the Densmore main to the existing system will occur on Tuesday 11/21. Water service installation will follow over the next couple of weeks.
November 5, 2023

Water service work, road rebuilding and site cleanup was the focus this week on East Street. Densmore work consisted on testing and disinfection.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Densmore water main was tested and cleaned. This main is now awaiting connection to the system.
  • Water service installation on East Street was completed.
  • Cutting of roadway and gravel installation was started on East Street.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Final connections of East Street are scheduled for Monday morning, this will connect the new main at Vine. This is the last step for installation of the water main on East Street.
  • Removal of the remaining East Street roadway surface will occur on Tuesday. Final grading will be ongoing with a target to pave the road near the end of next week weather dependant.
  • Connection of the Densmore main to the existing system may occur later in the week.

October 27, 2023

All water main has been installed and tested on East Street with only water services and final connections remaining. Water main has been installed on Densmore with testing and cleaning ongoing.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Disinfection of the water main on East Street south of McLaughlin was completed and the main was connected at McLaughlin.
  • Water service installation on East Street continued and are approximately half done.
  • Densmore water main was installed, and final testing has begun.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Water service installations will continue through the first half of the week on East Street.
  • Final connections of the new main on East Street at Vine will be completed near the end of the week. This will require some water service interruptions on Vine and East Street south of Vine. Notifications will be sent out once the work is scheduled.
  • Disinfection and testing of the Densmore water main will be completed and connection to the system is anticipated to occur mid-week.
  • Restoration of East Street may begin near the end of the week.
October 13, 2023

Final testing of the water main north of McLaughlin was completed and installation of the water main south of McLaughlin was completed. Connection of the main to Apple is scheduled for Monday October 16. Work is anticipated to begin shortly on Densmore.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Water main north of McLaughlin chlorinated and tested, it has passed the necessary tests and is ready for connection.
  • Water main was installed from McLaughlin to Vine, this was pressure tested and is in the process of being chlorinated.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Monday October 16 the water main will be connected to Apple Avenue. This will require shutdown of the water main which will affect all residents from McLaughlin to Apple. The water shut off will start at 9 AM.
  • Disinfection and testing of the main south of McLaughlin will continue and if completed the main will be connected at McLaughlin.
  • Installation of water services from Apple to McLaughlin may begin. These will require temporary interruptions of service while switching the new service over to houses, these will be coordinated with each resident.
  • Mobilization and possibly pipe installation will begin on Densmore.
October 6, 2023

Water main installation continued this week and testing on the first section of water main began.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Water main was installed past McLaughlin where a temporary cap was installed. Pressure testing of the main from Apple to McLaughlin was completed. Currently the main is being disinfected and tested.
  • Stripped topsoil south of McLaughlin.
  • Started installing water main south of McLaughlin.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Continue installing water main south of McLaughlin.
  • Assuming passing tests of the water main over the weekend the portion from Apple to McLaughlin will be connected to the existing main on Apple. This will require a brief shutdown of water for residents on East Street. This connection is currently scheduled for Tuesday October 10 starting at 9 AM.
  • Installation of water services from Apple to McLaughlin may begin.
September 29, 2023

Water main installation on East Street began this week starting near Apple Avenue and working south.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Installed approximately 800 ft of water main from Apple to the south.
  • Finished miscellaneous concrete removals for East Street.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Continue installing water main toward McLaughlin. Once water main is up to McLaughlin the Contractor intends to flush, pressure test and start chlorination of that section.
  • During testing, water main installation will continue to the south.
September 22, 2023

Work on East Street began this week with milling of portions of the roadway and driveway removal in preparation of water main installation. Work on water main was delayed until Monday 9/25.

Anticipated Work Next Week

  • Installation of water main starting from the south end of the project
September 14, 2023

Construction on East Street will begin the morning of September 18. 

On September 18, crews will be onsite to remove portions of the roadway in preparation of the water main installation. Work will be primarily on the east side of the roadway. Temporary impact to driveways due to equipment will be likely, but all access will be restored relatively quickly.

Water main construction is expected to begin on September 21, beginning at the south end of the project and working north. Access to drives will be impacted while crossing the drives with the water main. All driveway access will be restored following crossing and no later than the end of the business day.
