Muskegon County - East Side Water Main Replacements

Important Information

This project is a replacement of current water main located on East, West, Center, and Densmore Streets in Muskegon Charter Township.

The work will involve replacing aging drinking water mains, valves, hydrants, and water service pipe from the street to the property line. Replacement of the disturbed roadway, drives, and lawns will be completed as well.

Work will be on the following streets:

  • East Street, Vine to Apple (September to November of 2023)
  • Center Street, Southland to Apple (Spring of 2024)
  • West Street, Southland to Apple (Spring of 2024)
  • Densmore Street, Marvin to Marquette (November to December of 2023)

 

Roads will be closed to through traffic but open to residents.

Work on Center Street has now transitioned to water service installation and final connections of the water main while work on West Street is now in full swing.

Work Completed This Week on Center

  • Water services to residents were completed.

Work Completed This Week on West

  • Water main installation continued and is now installed from Apple Avenue to Vine.
  • Testing has begun on the water main from Apple to McLaughlin.

Anticipated Work on Center

  • Final connections of the new water main to the system will be completed at Southland and Oak Park, this will complete the water installation on Center Street.

Anticipated Work on West

  • Water main installation will continue south of Vine.
April 12, 2024

Work on Center Street has now transitioned to water service installation and final connections of the water main while work on West Street is now in full swing.

 

Work Completed This Week on Center

  • Water main connection at Vine Avenue was completed.
  • Water service installation continued with another 20 services being completed.

Work Completed This Week on West

  • Water main installation continued and is now installed from Apple Avenue to McLaughlin.

Anticipated Work on Center

  • Water service installation will continue, this may be completed by the end of the week.

Anticipated Work on West

  • Water main installation will continue south of McLaughlin
  • Testing on completed portions of water main will begin.
April 9, 2024

Work on Center Street has now transitioned to water service installation and final connections of the water main while work on West Street is now in full swing.

Work Completed This Week on Center

  • Water main installation south of Vine was completed, final testing is ongoing prior to connection to system.
  • Water service installation has begun, approximately 43 services were completed.

Work Completed This Week on West

  • Roadway removal and topsoil stripping was completed.
  • Water main installation started working from Apple to the south.

Anticipated Work on Center

  • Contractor will continue testing and connecting completed portions of the water main to allow installation of water services.
  • Water service installation will continue.

Anticipated Work on West

  • Water main installation will continue.
March 29, 2024

Water main mainline installation is nearing completion on Center Street and work on West Street will begin next week. Water service installation on Center will begin as well.

 

Work Completed This Week on Center

  • Water main from Apple to McLauglin was connected to the system.
  • Water main from McLaughlin to Vine was successfully pressure tested and is currently undergoing disinfection.
  • Water main is continuing to be installed south of Vine.

Anticipated Work on Center

  • Contractor will continue working south installing water main south of Vine.
  • Water service installation between Apple and McLaughlin will begin.
  • Final testing and disinfecting of the pipe south of McLaughlin will be ongoing.

Anticipated Work on West

  • Roadway drive removal is scheduled for early week.
  • Possibly begin installation of water main by the end of the week.
March 23, 2024

This was another good week for pipe installation even with the snow squall at the end! Water main mainline installation is nearing completion on Center Street and work on West Street is around the corner.

Work Completed This Week

  • Water main is currently installed from Apple Avenue to south of Vine. Most of the installation is anticipated to be complete next week.
  • Water main from Apple to McLaughlin has been fully tested and disinfected, connection to the system is anticipated in the next week.
  • Water main from McLaughlin to Vine is installed and undergoing final testing.
  • Water main is continuing to be installed south of Vine.

Anticipated Work

  • Contractor will continue working south installing water main south of Vine.
  • Connection of the first section of pipe to the water system is tentatively scheduled for March 28.
  • Final testing and disinfecting of the pipe south of McLaughlin will be ongoing.
March 15, 2024

This was a productive week and consisted of installation and testing of water main on Center Street from Apple to McLaughlin. Water main installation continues south of McLaughlin during the coming week. 

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Water main on Center Street from Apple Avenue to McLaughlin was installed, pressure tested, and cleaned. Testing of the water of the main will continue through the weekend.
  • Water main installation continued south on McLauglin.
  • Hydrants between Apple Avenue and McLaughlin Avenue were installed prior to testing.

Anticipated Work

  • Contractor will continue working south installing water main in the coming week.
  • Connection of the first section of pipe to the water system is tentatively scheduled for the second half of the next week.

March 11, 2024

Last week consisted of road removals and installation of water main on Center Street. Contractor has been very productive this week and made good progress.

Work Completed Last Week

  • Removed drive approaches, roadway and stripped topsoil for the full length of Center Street.
  • Water main on Center started at Apple Avenue and worked south, over 600 ft of water main was installed.

Anticipated Work

  • Contractor will continue working south installing water main.

 

March 1, 2024

Due to the warmer than usual weather, construction on this project will resume next week. Starting on Monday March 4 crews will begin removals on Center Street with pipe installation beginning mid-week. Work on Center Street is expected to be wrapped up by the end of May.

A few reminders:

  • This is an active construction site, please be aware of the equipment and excavations in the area.
  • Please have your trash can placed at the edge of the maintained road the evening before pickup.
  • Temporary mailboxes have been placed at designated locations.

Start dates for construction on West Street is unknown at this time, but is expected to be sometime in April.

December 8, 2023

This week underground work on Densmore was completed. The roadway has been restored for the winter. No additional work is anticipated until spring.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Final connections of the new water main to the system were completed at Wesley, James and Marquette.
  • All remaining water services were completed.
  • Gravel was placed on the roadway for the season, final aggregate surface will be placed in the Spring.

 

Anticipated Work

  • Final road grading on Densmore and lawn restoration on Densmore and East will be completed in the Spring.
  • Water main work on West and Center Streets will occur next year, start dates have not been determined yet. Notificaiton to residents will be sent out once schedules are known.
December 1, 2023

The focus this week was on water services on Densmore Street. At this time all services are completed. Houses with meter pits will have their meter pits replaced in the Spring.

 

Work Completed This Week

  • Water services on Densmore were completed.

 

Anticipated Work Next Week on Densmore (All dates below are weather dependent)

  • Connection of the new water main to Wesley Street will occur on December 5. This will interrupt water service for residents on Wesley Street between Sheridan and Densmore.
  • Connection of the new water main to James Street will occur on December 6. This will interrupt water service for residents on James Street between Sheridan and Densmore and residents on Densmore from Wesley to James.
  • Connection of the new water main to Marquette will occur on December 7. No service interruption is expected for this work.
  • Restoration of roadway will start near the end of the week.
