City of Muskegon Heights - 2026 Road & Water Main Construction

Project Information

The work will involve replacement of water mains, valves, hydrants, and water services in the street, including new road where the water main is reconstructed. New ramps and sidewalks will also be constructed where they are disturbed for the work.

Garbage Service:
Customers are encouraged to add a piece of tape to their cart and to clearly write their address on their cart. Service will remain and the Contractor will assist with getting your cart picked up and returned on your regular garbage days if the road in front of your home or business is inaccessible to garbage trucks.

Mail Service:
Post deliveries will be maintained throughout the project.

Access/Traffic:
Work will result in full closure within the construction areas as noted on the map shown. Follow the updates for specific closure dates. Broadway Avenue detour will be Glade to Summit to Peck Street.  Temple and 6th Streets will be open as much as possible to cross Broadway. A lot of snow has fallen this winter, and a lot has melted already which means road construction is not far away!  There will be a lot of road and water main construction this spring and summer in the City of Muskegon Heights, and it will begin on March 2, 2026.

Over $20 Million worth of construction investment will take place on the drinking water system in the City of Muskegon Heights this summer.

First up will be Broadway Avenue between Glade Street and 5th Street.  Broadway Avenue will close to all traffic on the morning of Monday, March 2, 2026.  The road will be closed until Labor Day, 2026, including access to Broadway Avenue from the side streets.  However, you will be able to cross Broadway Avenue at either or both 6th Street or Temple Street during construction. The posted detour for Broadway Avenue will be Peck Street to Summit to Glade Street back to Broadway Avenue.  Due to the accelerated timeline of construction, construction crews will likely be working at both ends of the project at the same time. Road pavement will be removed the first week of March and water main installation will begin by the middle of March. This project is an extension of last year’s work that was completed between 5th Street and Reynolds. This will complete Broadway through the western City Limits of Broadway Avenue.

Also scheduled for reconstruction in 2026:

  • Starting in April:
Delano Avenue between Reynolds and Getty Streets – Water main work will take place at each intersection, but the entire roadway will not be rebuilt, just the intersections.
