Important Information

The City of Wyoming owns and operates the Donald K. Shine Drinking Water Plant located near Lake Michigan on New Holland Street. Water from Lake Michigan is pumped to the plant where it is treated and then distributed to thirteen communities serving over 250,000 people in Ottawa and Kent Counties.

The City and Ottawa County is embarking on a multi-year construction project to enhance this regional asset through construction of approximately 11 miles of pipeline. This project, funded by ratepayers from the customer communities, will improve the drinking water transmission system reliability and functionality for the entire region.

The project is expected to be completed over several years with multiple contractors coordinating their efforts. Kamminga & Roodvoets of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Ric-Man Construction of Sterling Heights, Michigan are the two general contractors entrusted to construct this pipeline.

Access/Traffic:

Local traffic will be maintained during pipeline construction. There may be times when your driveway is inaccessible because pipeline construction is occurring in front of your house or driveway restoration is taking place. The contractor will work with you ahead of time and will make special access arrangements with you if needed.

Mail:

Mailboxes that interfere with pipeline construction will be temporarily relocated so that mail service can be maintained during construction. If your mailbox needs to be temporarily relocated, the contractor will inform you of where it has been moved to.

Garbage Pickup:

The contractor will work with you and your waste hauler to maintain service throughout construction. If pipeline construction interferes with your waste haulers ability to pick up your garbage, the contractor will temporarily move your garbage binds to a central location and return them to the end of your driveway by the end of the work day.

May 7, 2026
  • Work at the intersection of 160th and Van Buren has been delayed due to challenging groundwater conditions. Additional dewatering will be installed next week to allow intersection work to continue.
  • In the meantime, K&R will resume laying pipe east towards 152nd Avenue.
  • Residents will continue to have access to the south leg of the 160th/Van Buren intersection.
May 1, 2026
  • Van Buren Street from Butternut to 160thAvenue is closed, from 160th to 152nd Avenue is closed, and from 152nd to 144th is closed.
  • The intersection of 160th and Van Buren was closed this week and will remain closed for approximately two weeks for pipe installation and culvert replacement within the intersection.
  • Road building and restoration efforts continued between Butternut and 160th The road is taking shape and gravel has been placed. Asphalt paving is planned for the week of May 11.

 

  • Next week, Van Buren Street from 144th to 136th will be closed. K&R will begin road removal, mailbox relocation, pipe staging, etc. in preparation for pipe laying. Pipe laying is expected to start the week of May 17.

 

  • Van Buren Street from US-31 to 120thAvenue is closed.
  • Pipe laying continues eastward. Pipe laying will continue next week as well as work inside the pipe. Later in the week, the crew will be falling back to install various appurtenances on pipe already installed.

 

  • New Holland Street from 104thAvenue to 96th Avenue is closed.
  • Ric-Man completed connections to the existing 54″ transmission main and began filling the drained portion of the 54″ transmission main last night.
  • Next, Ric-Man and Wyoming will commence flushing, disinfection, and testing required to return the 54″ transmission main to service.

 

  • At the Drinking Water Plant, progress has been made over the last few weeks preparing the excavation for construction of the lower level of the surge tank building. Progress will continue next week with dewatering.
April 29, 2026
  • The intersection of 160th and Van Buren will be closed for approximately two weeks starting tomorrow, April 30. During the closure, K&R will be installing pipeline through the intersection as well as replacing a large culvert.
  • Residents west of 160th Avenue will have access via Butternut Drive.
  • Residents east of 160th Avenue will have access via 152nd Avenue starting May 4th. Between now and May 4th residents between 15420 Van Buren and 160th Avenue may still utilize the south leg of the 160th/Van Buren intersection.

April 24, 2026
  • Van Buren Street from Butternut to 160thAvenue is closed, from 160th to 152nd Avenue is closed, and from 152nd to 144th is closed.
  • Road building began between Butternut and 160th The road is being graded for gravel placement.
  • K&R continues spot excavations to address some joint issues on the pipe already installed.
  • Next week, K&R plans to continue road building and recommence pipe laying east of Quail Meadow Court.
  • In the coming weeks, K&R will be relocating the pipe crew currently working east of US-31. The crew will begin pipe laying work between 144th and 136th Preparations for this work, including road removal, mailbox relocation, pipe staging, etc. are scheduled to begin the week of May 4. Property owners along this stretch of road should receive the letter soon.

 

  • Van Buren Street from US-31 to 120thAvenue is closed.
  • Pipe laying continued eastward. Pipe laying will continue next week as well as work inside the pipe.

 

  • New Holland Street from 104thAvenue to 96th Avenue is closed.
  • Ric-Man completed a pressure test of the pipe installed in New Holland Street and the easement piping to the south.
  • Next, Ric-Man will begin the process of connecting to the existing pipeline in New Holland Street and returning the 54″ transmission main to service.
April 24, 2026

West of US-31, K&R continues work on joint excavations. Yesterday’s excavation was in front of 15881 Van Buren Street. This hole will be backfilled today, and another joint just east of the driveway for 15816 Van Buren Street will be excavated.

April 22, 2026

K&R has spent the last several weeks excavating various pipe joints to correct some issues. Locations of the excavations change every couple of days and access around these excavations can be impossible. Today’s excavation is in front of 15975 Van Buren Street. Tomorrow, K&R will be excavating a joint in front of 15881 Van Buren Street.

April 17, 2026
  • Van Buren Street from Butternut to 160thAvenue is closed, from 160th to 152nd Avenue is closed, and from 152nd to 144th is closed.
  • Pipe laying has halted for the time being. K&R is continuing miscellaneous external and internal work on pipe already installed.
  • The first course of asphalt paving between Butternut and 160th Avenue is tentatively scheduled for the week of May 11, weather permitting. Restoration and road building along this length of road will begin soon as weather permits.

 

  • Van Buren Street from US-31 to 120thAvenue is closed.
  • Pipe laying continued eastward as weather conditions allowed. Pipe laying will continue next week as well as work inside the pipe.

 

  • New Holland Street from 104thAvenue to 96th Avenue is closed.
  • Ric-Man continues working on the pipe interior in preparation for pressure testing. Filling of the pipeline is expected to begin today.
  • Next week, Ric-Man will fill the remaining pipeline and pressure test, then begin connections to the existing pipeline in New Holland Street.
April 10, 2026
  • Van Buren Street from Butternut to 160thAvenue is closed, from 160th to 152nd Avenue is closed, and from 152nd to 144th is closed.
  • Pipe laying has progressed east of Quail Meadow Court.
  • Next week, K&R will continue laying pipe eastward toward 152nd Miscellaneous external and internal work on pipe already installed will continue.
  • Road building between Butternut and 160th Avenue is anticipated to begin shortly.

 

  • Van Buren Street from US-31 to 120thAvenue is closed.
  • Pipe laying crossed 124th Avenue and will continue eastward next week.

 

  • New Holland Street from 104thAvenue to 96th Avenue is closed.
  • Ric-Man completed the connection from the New Holland Street pipe to the easement pipe previously installed south of New Holland Street. They are working to finish the pipe interior and exterior in preparation for pressure testing.
  • Over the next few weeks, Ric-Man will fill the pipeline in New Holland Street and south of New Holland Street for pressure testing. After pressure testing, the new pipeline will be connected to the existing pipeline, disinfected and tested, and then returned to service.
April 1, 2026
  •  Van Buren Street from Butternut to 160thAvenue is closed, from 160th to 152nd Avenue is closed, and from 152nd to 144th is closed.
  •  K&R spent the first part of this week investigating joints west of their current work area and preparing the area between Butternut and 160th Avenue for road building.
  •  Pipe laying near Quail Meadow Court resumed yesterday and will continue eastward into next week.
  •  Joint repairs west of the current work area will continue this week and into next.
  •  Road building preparations will continue next week between Butternut and 160th Road building cannot begin until the joint repairs are completed.

 

  •  Van Buren Street from US-31 to 120thAvenue is closed.
  •  Pipe laying is very near to 124th K&R may still cross 124th Avenue this week, weather permitting. Pipe laying will continue next week.
  •  Work inside the pipe continues.
  •  The valve vault for the valve near 128th Avenue is scheduled to arrive this week. At some point, K&R will move back west to install the vault, valve, and adjacent piping. This work has not yet been scheduled.

 

  •  New Holland Street from 104thAvenue to 96th Avenue is closed. The open trench crossing the road has been backfilled and temporarily restored.
  •  Ric-Man installed the second gate valve south of New Holland Street.
  •  Ric-Man is currently excavating for placement of a valve vault south of New Holland Street. This work will continue into next week.
March 30, 2026
  • Van Buren Street from Butternut to 160thAvenue is closed, from 160th to 152nd Avenue is closed, and from 152nd to 144th is closed.
  • K&R spent most of this week preparing the area between Butternut and 160th Avenue for road building. Work included general site cleanup and miscellaneous external and internal pipe work.
  • Road building between Butternut and 160th Avenue is anticipated to begin shortly.
  • Next week, K&R may continue pipe laying through Quail Meadow Court, weather permitting.

 

  • Van Buren Street from US-31 to 120thAvenue is closed.
  • Pipe deliveries for work east of US-31 are complete.
  • Pipe laying is approaching 124th K&R plans to cross 124th Avenue this coming week, weather permitting.
  • Work inside the pipe continues.

 

  • New Holland Street from 104thAvenue to 96th Avenue is closed. The road is closed with an open trench across the street for pipe installation. The trench will be backfilled and the road open by end of Monday, 3/30.
  • Ric-Man is working on connections from the New Holland Street pipe to the easement piping previously installed. They installed one gate valve north of New Holland Street this week and are working on installation of a second gate valve south of New Holland Street.
  • One of two 42″ ball valves arrived on site this week.
  • Next week, Ric-Man will continue working on piping in this area, including installation of a valve vault south of New Holland Street.
